Manawatu County Council.
Tlie ordinary monthly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Cham* ber, Foxtuii, on Tuesday last. Present — Crs Rockstrow (chairman), Mcßeth, Snnson, Bruce, Hadfield, Linton, Fry, McLennan and Gray. The minutes of the last ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. The following correspondence was read : — Circular re drain pipe works from Wellington ; letters from Cr Brafi? re Karere road ; Cr McLennan re Foxton Highway District ; Government Printer re Pyke's handbook ; A. Falloon, covering cheque £46 10s ; Feilding- Stab, re advertisement ; H. Graff, re slaughter houses, &c. ; Cr Gray, r- port of road at Longburn junction ; F. Costall, account for attending nominations ; Fritz Jensen, re Mrs Andersen left Palmerston; Colonial Secretary's office, re Highway district, and boundaries of riding; telegram F. Mowlem, returning officer; Public Works Office, re plans Gorge Bridge ; Manawatu Highway Board, for certificate ; Warne and Beard, re terms for delivery of timber; telegram Colonial Secretary, re voting on old rolls ; telegram Eirton and Curtis, re polling place A.wahuri; Kiwitea Highway Board, re grant in aid of purchase of land for deviation of road ; Sandon and Carnarvon. Highway Board, re Wilson's road and small birds; telegram Property Tax Department, re total valuation of Manawatu County ; Mr Sherwill, telegrams and letters as returning officer; Wanganui Borough Council, notice of committee meeting ; Public Works Office, re road from Cunningham's corner ; S. Standen, re his rates, claiming certain allowance ; A. Falloon, re his lease alterations ; J, H. Kirk, resignation as returning officer for Oroua ; J. Aitken, for extension of lime for contract ; returns from the various returning officers, giving result of the polls. The letter from the agent of the E. and C. Aid Corporation, referred to in our Tuesday's report of the meeting of the Manchester Highway Board, was also read. Eesolved, on the motion of Cr Sanson, seconded by Cr McLennan, That the extension of time applied for by J. Aitken be not granted, as it would cause serious inconvenience to the travelling public. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Sanson, seconded by Cr Bruce, that no conveyance be allowed to cross over the Awahuri Bridge with a load heavier than two tons while said bridge is undergoing repair. Proposed by Cr Sanson, seconded by Cr Mcßetb, That the matter of Messrs Warne and Beard's letter re their contract to supply timber be referred to the Chairman and Cr Fry, as a committee, to report at next meeting, such committee to arrange equitable terms with Messrs Warne and Beard, provided both parties can agree. Cr Fry moved, and Cr Linton seconded the following amendment, That this Council is willing to agree to Messrs Warne and Beard's terms of 10s lid per 100 ft for all timber to be delivered, and that the Chairman be empowered to enter into a new contract, in accordance with these terms. The amendment was then put and carried. Eesolved, on the motion of Cr Bockstrow, seconded by Cr Gray, That the Foxton Highway District as gazetted be now merged into the Manawatu County, in accordance with the prayer of settlers in said district, and also in terms of the Counties Act, Amendment Act, 1882, and that the Clerk be instructed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Colonial Secretary to be gazetted. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Gray, seconded by Cr Rockstrow, That the Clerk be instructed io take delivery of all books and papers of the Foxton Highway Board, as soon as the merging be gazetted. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Sanson, seconded by Cr Rockstrow, That the several special rates as advertised to provide the necessary sinking fund for the various works to be constructed under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act be now made, the same to be payable from and after the 2nd of May, inst. Resolved, on the motion of Cr McLennan, seconded by Cr Sanson, That the petition of the settlers of Awahuri be received and granted, and that the 6ale yard there be declared a public pound, Mr Samuel to be appointed poundkeeper, and that the Chairman take the necessary steps to give effect to this resolution. Eighteen applications for the position of Engineers for each of the two divisions of the County were opened and read. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Sanson, seconded by i r McLennan, That the resignation of Mr K>rk be accepted. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Sanson, seconded by Cr McLennan, That Mr G. Williams, farmer, of Sanson, be appointed returning officer for the Oroua Riding. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Bruce, seconded by Cr Linton, That the Engineer be instructed to prepare the necessary plans and estimates for the alteration of the Karere road, in accordance with the Roads and Bridges Construction Act. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Sanson, seconded by L'r Fry, That the bye-laws relating to t lie pigs and goats running at large be adopted, and steps taken to have them gazetted in accordance with law. The Council went into committee to consider the applications for the appointments of two County Engineers/and the proposals contained in the letter from the E. and C. Aid Corporation. The results were that Mr C. Bray, of Feilding, was appointed Engineer for the Northern, and Mr J. W. Stewart, of Wellington, for the Southern Ridings. ' The proposals of the Corporation were also agreed to. The Council, having sat till 10 p.m., adjourned till the next monthly session.
