Manchester Rifles.

♦ There was a Captain's Parade of tntf above corps held at the Public Hall on Saturday evening last. The attendance ' was good, thirty offcers, non-commif* sioned officers, and members being present. After a smart drill of att hour* during which the men were instructed bjf Lieut. Blackmore in skirmishing drill and the mannal exercises, the parade watf dismissed. A meeting was then held to elect a conncil of six members, composed of non-commissioned officers and aea« Seven candidates were nominated, Yi>* Kirton, Rowley., Goodbehere, Er*ms, Wright, Karle and Hill. A ballot iw taken, and the first six named were d»ly elected. During the parade it was intimated that penalties for non-attendance" would be rigidly enforced in the future. If any volunteer is unable te attead tt Government or Captain's Parade he should make proper application for leare 1 of absence to Captain Leth bridge. Tbitf course will save considerable trouble and prevent a fine in many cases. Tke corps has made a splendid beginning, and if it continues as it has, began it will maintain the position of the old corps as the premier volunteer corps of tbe West Coast. But it is only by constant attend" ance at drill and careful attention to the* instructions imparted there thai the members can keep up this Wp«tafion. They have the advantage of possessing" the services of a most efficient drill in* structor in Lieut. Blaclcmore, and itshould be— and we doubt not will be —' (he constant endeavor of each member far profit by his teaching.
