Roads in the Kiwitea.

to the Editor of the feildiwg- BTa2# Sir, — In your issues of the 14th and 17th respectively^ there appears let* ters referring to myself^ and also coxa' plaining of bad roads or no roads at dIL In reply to the former, as the County Council have not received any rates from the Harbor Board Block, the Council is not in a position At present to efpfnd any money in that direction. However I am in the receipt of a letter from the Secretary of the Kiwitea Highway Board* asking me to use my influence at the netfe sitting of the Council to hare two of the roads running through the Harbor Board Block gazetted as main roads* It id needless to say I intend to do my best to have those roads gazetted } and, at thfl same time, would advise those settler's, it! their own interest, to support the special rate if they are fortunate enough to have those roads gazetted as main roads* 111 reply to " Beaconsfield/' I quite gym* pathise with those settlers who have* during the last five or six years, suffered so much from the want of passable roads* I also have suffered in the past, when 1 had to travel from Feilding by way of; a pack-track to my place, a distance of 25 miles. I take this opportunity of re« minding the ratepayers of the Kiwiteft District that on Saturday, the 28th Last., a poll will be taken at Mr Packraan'a residence, Cheltenham, for the special rate, in order to secure the grant fof roads, As the payment of one-fourth means 10 annual payments of 6d in the £, it is to (he interest of every settler ill the district to support the special rate. The settlers must know that the Roads 1 Construction Act of 1882 is the best iot opening up the country the Government ever passed. — I am, &c, EOBEBT McBBT&« Kiwitea, April 20th, 1883.
