UNKNO WN
j With reference to a letter which appeared in our last issue, touching the establishment of a ;■•><( otlii-e at '('aonui, we have made the u-vess-uy eriquu-i -s from Mr Stevens, our local postmaster, and he informs us that the proper steps , to be taken will be for a number of the residents to prepare a petition to the Postmaster-General, praying for such a [ concession to be made, and at the same time handing in with the petition the I written statement of the person willing to undertake tlie duties of postmaster. Messrs Bailey, Bros have a suitable otlice in the centre of population atTaonui, and I we understand '.hat these gentlemen would willingly allow it to be used as a post office, and accept the Jesponsibilities of the position. We are satisfied that the requirements of the Government and the settlers would be ably carried out by by them. The expanse to the Government would be trifling, and the business done by the sale of postage and duty stamps would more than recoup it. We urge upon the leading settlers at T.ionui to take this matter in hand at once, and a few weeks need only elapse before tbe business could be settled and the post office in full working order.
