ILLITERACY IN THE UNITED STATES.
The Washington Census Office has just issued a special return giving statistics of illiteracy in the United States at at the last census taking. <he aggregate number of persons 10 years old and upwards in the States and Territories of the Union is 36,761,607. Of these 4,923,451 or 13.4 percentare returned as unable to read, and 6,239,958, or 17 per cent., as unable to write. The proportion of illiterate persons is greater among the negroes than among white people. Out of 4,601,207 colored people above 10 years of age, no fewer than 3,220,878 were found to be unable to write.
