LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Mr C. V. Furrie has been successful in growing good tobacco plants in Foxtm. The Methodists are ahead of all other denominations in the work of advancing female education in Japan. According to the police returns the population of Dunedia is 25,000. The population of the city and suburb-* is 53,000. We understand that Hareourt's property, at Kiwitoa, recently sold by auc tion at £5 per acre, ii.-is cinnged hands, a Palmerstun genilem.-m boing the purchaser. ■he land was sold at an advance oE 30s an acre. Mr Hngli, Jeweller, will take his departure for Europe by the Orient Line, via Melbourne, about the middle of April. Our readers are reminded that Mr Hugli is disposing of his fine stock of watches, rings, &c., at remarkably low rates. The planks of a bridge on the Ashurst road, fronting Mr Neilson's* property, have given way and urgently need looking to by the engineer in charge of the roads. A few hours' labor will be sufficient to make the bridge safe. A London dentist (says an exchange) uses a small incandescent lamp to illuminate the cavity of the mouth during deutal operations. A torchlight pr )cession would be required for Billy Wilson's j facial cavity, or the recesses of some of the Tambour Major girls.' mouths. We call the attention of the County Engineer to the condition of a culvert on the Awahuri road between Mr Bones's dwelling and Awahuri. There is a hole made by the breaking of one of the flooring planks, which might prove dangerous to horses. The Court Loyal, Peilding, A.O. Foresters, met last night at the Court room, Denbigh Hotel. Two new members were initiated. The Chief Ranger, Bro. Peter Thomson, was presented with a Past Officers neck ribbon and certificate. Bro. P.C.E. Worsfold made the presentation, and complimented Bro. Thomson on the valuable services he had rendered the Order. At a meeting of the directors of the Ashburton Cheese Factory held a fewdays ago, a requisition was received from the farmers in the district asking whether the factory would be closed at the end of the cheesemaking season, namely, May 3 1st, the secretary replied that the factory would be kept open as long as a supply of milk was forthcoming.

The popular actress Jeuuie ISye will probably visit Feilding in April with a company of talented artistes. Twenty three officers and men of the Manchester Kifles will leave by train this evening, to assist at the Easter Encampment at Wanganni. As a sign of the daily increasing prosperity of Feilding, il is pleasurable to notice the number of cottages and dwellng houses now in course of erection. Messrs Dawson and Fitzherbert, the • • t i ■!'_*: m-s of the Bank of Australasia and : '■.<'> w Zealand respectively, leave ': v ,: for We 'inirion where 1 '-i y i-.; l -ir Ka-ter Holidays. Whiteman, who was staying at White's Hotel, Foxton, had a fit of somnambulism the other night and fell <>ut of a window on to a footpath, a distance of 14 feet, breaking his arm, and sustaining other injuries. The prospectus of a ' heese and Butter Factory for Wootlville has been issued, with a proposed capital of £2,000, in shares of £1 each. This will wake up the Oroua Downs farmers, and perhaps cause the valuable plant introduced by Mr Campbell to be withdrawn from the market. Terpsichore has a temple specially dedicated to her worship at Makmo, wher* a good number of devotees biweekly " do congregate " to do her homage. The members of the club intend to hold a ball in Feilding about the third week in April. The profits are to be given to the brass band, and the particulars will shortly be advertised. Messrs Nolan, Tonks, & Co., Hawera, advertise a 14 horse powtr engine and boiler, sawmill and all appliances in good working order and perfect condition, for sale. To any of the persons who have recently purchased totara bush, land in the Manchester Block this is a splendid opportunity. We understand the mill could easily be shipped to Wanganui, being compact and easy of transit. The Feilding State School was closed tkis afternoon for Easter holidays. Ihe scholars are to reassemble on Wednesday next. We notice that the Board did not include the whole of the Easter week in the holidays. The attendance at school during Easter week is likely to be so small as to be prejudicial to the average for the quarter's attendance, and the poor average for the one quarter very materially affects the " standing" of the schoolmaster. Who will dispute Te Whiti's powers (says the Budget) as a prophet when events happen in the manner he has all alone foretold? A correspondent sends us from Normanby postal card with the following on it:— "May not Te Whiti now be acknowledged a prophet of the fir .t water. As good as the Delphian Oracles at ambiguity?- Vide old files. Did he not prophecy that he would return lo Parihaka on a star! And did he not actually return on the Stella (Anglice Star)?" We desire to draw the special attention of land purchasers to Mr Croskery's advertisement of a section containing 200 acres in the Kiwitea district for sale. This piece of land is splendidly situated about 40 acres are cleared, and the remaining 160 acres are covered with magnificent forest. As the sale is to close a partnership account it will be without reserve. The terms are peculiarly attractive, as a considerable portion of the purchase money could be left on morU gage. This is a splendid opportunity for an investment. Says the New Zealand Herald : — Those who have recently travelled in the King country, and endeavored to sound the Natives on the amnesty question, state that if the Europeans are under the impression that the Natives humbly accept the offered pardon for their past offences, they are sadly mistaken. The Maoris simply accept the amnesty as a cry of " quits" after a drawn battle — a formal token of peace-making and reconciliation. But as to anything like the idea of pardon and forgiveness, they simply laugh at it. They are none the less pleased, however, at the step, as they were sick and weary of the suspense and uncertainty which hung over the relations of the two races. Major Atkinson in his address at 0 iristchurch on Tuesday said we were not only a hard working people, but a hard drinking and smoking people. Last year consumers of drink and tobacco paid away over £3,000,000. He thought everyone considering this fact must admit that among a population so well housed, clothed, and fed as the people of the colony were, there was great room for saving. This would come out in strong light when it was known how much was put by during the year. The total income of the friendly societies was £63,000 ; increase in savings banks, £27.000 ; and amount of insurance premium, £300,000 ; a total of aboui £600,CXK), against a drink and tobacco bill of £3,000,000.
