We congratulate the settlors an 1 stock-raisers in this district that a move ment Las been made to wan I n tinformation of n Cheoss i<.->i i '■■' Factory- Some pen'-e <• v ■■-^ ■ invited by circular our ■:■■ ..into be held ar the i J ui<J H , . Jt is almost needles tor u< t-> >a i:: • this action receives our 'lenny .si; port, and we believe that -hn .s-un . feeling- will actuate every one; wtio ii.j really the welfare of tht; district mheart. The Manchester Block j»fw gesses advantages than are <liar i d '»\ few otlier settleiiients in the < oloiv. in that it is suitable in every way, not only for this especial industry, but for all others connected with agricultural and stock-raising pursuits. The principal advantage of a factory is that the milk produced on the surrounding farms, or by persons who only have one or two cows giving- milk not. required foj family use, is collected and worked up in one series of operations, thus reducing- the cost of labor, and yielding- butter and cheese of uniform quality. The milk is brought to the factory twice a day by the farmer in cans of peculiar construction, and he takes back in them the skim cr sour milk which is divided according* to ihe fresh milk delivered. Tbe establishment of such a factory in Feilding will be beneficial in many ways. 1 he number of milch cattle reared will be much geater because farmers will have a prompt cash market for their milk, and the increase of stock will find its way to the markets now opening for it in the seaport towns i hat are preparing to export beef to England. An immediate influx of new settlers would also mean the introduction of new capital and labor. The capital required to establish a factory is not greater than could oe raised in our midst with very little exertion ; £4000 would meet all requirements, and its expenditure would probably be extended over a period of a year at least. This amount of capital for a Joint Stock Company may appear smal, but. we believe it would be found sufficient for all purposes at the beginning. However, this will be one of the principal questions to be discussed on Thursday evening, and doubtless considerable light will be thrown on the subject. The main point is the judicious expenditure of the money, and | only in such a way as will prove profitable to the shareholders, and beneficial to its principal su f/porters — the farners. The farmers must bear in mind that the preseut success of the project will partly depend ou them — not by their putting actual money into it, I ut by producing plenty of milk to keep the factory in full work, and on the other hand the directors muht not depend entirely on the farmers to keep up the supply of milk, for if they do the factory will share the fate of others where similar dependance has been placed ou them. The company must first be prepared to raise for themselves a known quantity of milk from cows, either owned or leased, and let the supply from other sources be a secondary consideration. It is a melancholy fact that no class of men are so slow to make any change in their modes of livingor earning money as are farmers. They caunot be " rus-hed" into any uew line of action, especially if it requires any exercise of new or unaccustomed exertion. Festina lente is ever their motto, and will doubtless be followed in the present case.
