GAS EXPLOSION IN WELLINGTON.
(PEB UNITE!} FHKSS ASBOCIATIOX.) Wflungton, This Day. . A serious j explosion of gas took place in the refresbmeut room of Peter Laing's confectionery establishment, on Lambton Quay. It appears that last night the c'landelier had been pulled so far dow.n as to cause a leak. On Mr La ing and the cook, named David Smith, entering the room this morning at six, the air was strongly impregnated with, gas. Smith struck a match to see where the leak was and a terrible explosion followed, Smith being blown into the next room through, the open door -way. He .was .seriously burnt about the head and face and shoulders,. , but not dangerously. The outer door, was blown open and the skplight and windows blown, out, pictures [smashed, &c. ; MrLaing was blown 'through another doorway right on to the tcounter of the 'shop arid was buined about the face < and hands. He had, however, presence of mind to take off his coat and" beat out the flames, •which, had seized ott the inflammable' contents of the room. The two doors being opened greatly lessened tlie force of the' explosion, or the consequences would' have been very serious. .',
