The Interprovincial outrigger race between the Union Club, Christchurch and .Star Club, Wellington, takes place at 4.30 this afternoon. The course depends upon the state ef the water, and the crews have decided to meet the referee, at 3 this afternoon, when the question will be determined. It is more than probable that the shore at Petorae will be the spot where the struggle will |be fought out as they can depend upon ! smooth water. The Wellington men are j .the favorites and 5 to 4 is laid on them. I A six-roomed house, owned and oceu-J-ied by Aadrew Young, at Manaia, has ieen destroyed by fire. Insured in the Colonial office for £300. The Government have received the following telegram from Hursthouse;' Was sent by *i r Bryce to explore the | country between Alexandra and Mofcau, with a view to find a line of railway. Was warned by Maoris not to go, but j did go and got as far as Otorowhaaga j •when the Maoris refused to let him pass. The Natives were friendly but very I positive in not allowing an exploration. It is believed that the obstruction is only temporaryNothing has teen settled about new Commission, to decide on the West Coast Railway.
