A steel merchant named Thomas Whitehead, living at Sheffield, had for some few days been singular in ; his manner, and after lying in bed all one day, he came downstairs in the evening talking in a. rambling manner. He then stripped himself naked, and in the absence of his wife took the i baby from the cradle and dashed its , brains out- The mother came in •' just at the time, but too late to save ! the child. H.Q was arrested at Shet- ; field late tbe same night on a charge of murdering his infant child, but ' died on the following morning in the police cells from acute delirium tremens. While in Ids cell he made a violent attack on the officer who ! brought h'm medicine. Five con-' i stable 6 were afterwards in attendance I until his death. H» was raving mad, and the police had struggles with hira j all uijjht. — Wo-ld. I
