FEILDING BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held at the Council Office, on Thursday evening. Present — His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Crs Goodbehere, Worsfold, Eutherford, Sherwi 1, Lewers, Thompson, and Fowles. The minutes of the previous ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. The following report of the PubKe Works Committee was received ; — PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE BEPORT. Your committee beg to report as follows, and recommend : — (1). That two inexpensive foot-bridges ■ be placed across the stream in Marlborough and Denbigh-streets, to enable the residents in the vicinity to gain access to their houses, and that the maintenance man be instructed to carry out the work, aud employ such assistance as may be necessary for so doing. (2). That nothing be done towards improving the condition of Grey-street between Denbigh-street and Derby-street, as no material benefit could be derived from any works which were not of a costly nature. (3). That arrangements have been made to place a two-feet culvert across Northstreet at the water course complained of by Mr Lyne, the labor to be done by the road man. (4). That notice be given to.the oeeupier of section 228, Grey-street, to fill in the hole of stagnant water on said section, to such level as will cause all rain water to run off through s small culvert already constructed. (5). That no action be taken with reference to 'the drainage of the blind creek crossing Denbigh-street, as the financial position of the Borough does not warrant the expenditure necessary to abate the nuisance which exists during the summer months. (6). That at present nothing be done by the Council with regard to the old water course between Messrs Rutherford, J. C. Thompson's and Gichard's premises, as the owners of the property through which it runs are filling in the bed of same, so as to abate any nuisance which in future might arise therefrom. Feank Y. Lethbbidge, Chairman. COBBESPONMJNCE. From Mrs Fitzgerald, objecting to pay rates till she had a road from her property in Marlborough-street. From the Wauganui Town Cleric, requesting payment oi the Council's contribution of £12 10s towards the enlargement of Wanganui Hospital. From Charles Hodges, resigning hU office as Hanger. Eesolved, on the motion of Cr Thompson, seconded by Cr Goodbehere that toe tender of resignation by the Banger be accepted. Eesolved, on the motion of Cr Sberwill, seconded by Cr Worsfold, that the contribution to the Wanganui Hospital be paid as soon as the funds of the Conn- ■ cil will admit. The Mayor stated that the subject of Mrs Fitzgerald's letter was dealt with in the Public Works Committee's report. Eesolved, on the motion of Cr Thompson, seconded by Cr Eutherford, that recommendations 1 and 2 of the Public Works Committee's report be adopted. Eesolved, on the motion of Cr Sher* will, seconded by Cr Fowles, that the words "owner" be inserted instead of " occupier" in clause 4 of the Public Works Committee's report, and that the amended clause be adopted. After considerable discussion on clause 5 of the above report, it was resolved, on the motion of Cr Thompson, seconded by Cr Lewers, that the discussion of the alleged nuisance in Denbigh-street bo deferred for the present. Cr Thompson proposed, and Cr Lowers, seconded, That the recommendation of the Public Works Committee re the drainage of sections in Manohester*st. bt not adopted. After some discussion the resolution. was put and carried. Eesolved, on the motion of Cr Thompson, seconded by Cr Eutherford, that the Council adopt some advisable means to at once restore the natural drainage to the said sections in Manchester-street, and that legal advice be obtained if necessary. Cr Thompson said that on behalf of many ratepayers he wished to ask to whom the recreation or sports ground belonged, or who were the trustees, or whether the Borough Council were not the proper authorities te hold and take the care of such land. Considerable discussion ensued on the subject, after which it was resolved, on the motion of Cr Thompson, seconded by Cr Worsfold, That the Mayor be instructed to make enquiries as to the possibility of this Council obtaining possession of the Feilding Sports Ground. . Eesolved, on the motion of Cr Loudoo, seconded by Cr Eutherford, that the Public Works Committee obtain information as to the cost of lowering the present culvert in Manchester-street from opposite Mr Thompson's to the Makinb, and also the cost of the culvert across Man-chester-street, with the view of obtaining the cheaper drainage, and report at next meeting of the Council. Cr Thompson proposed that the subject of a loan be taken into consideration, and then moved that the Council go into committee on the loan question. The question having been freely dis- ' cussed m committee, it was unanimously resolved, on the motion of Cr Lowers, seconded by Cr Thompson, that a loan be raised for the Borough of Feilding, and that the following Crs be appointed as a Loan Committee : — The Mayor, Crs Loudon, Sherwill, Goodbehere, Thompson, and Lewers and that the committee meet on Monday next. Kesolved, on the motion of Cr Fowles, seconded by Cr Goodbehere, that the Council meet specially on Thursday next, March Ist, for the purpose of arranging for the matter of the loan. Eesolved, that the next ordinary meeting of the Council be held On Thursday, the Bth of March, The Council then adjourned.
