SEPARATION.

- ■ . •■ : MEETING AT HALCOMBE. A public meeting was held at Halcombe last night to consider the advis_bleness of dividing the County. Mr Tompkins was voted to the chair, and after a few preliminary remarks, he called on Mr Macarthur who read the minutes of the meeting held atPalmerston the previous evening. He said that in Palmerston the feeling was unanimously i»!'avoro_ separation, and large numbers liftd signed the petition. He believed the local boards could manage their own affairs, in their immediate vicinity, betler than a County Council at tne other end of the County. He proposed the following resoluticn, " That in the opinion of this meeting ii; is desirable to separate the three northern ridings from the Manawatu Couftty with a view of suspending the Counties, Act and working under Act relating to Highway Boards and Local Bodies. Mr R. Linton seconded the resolution, lie said he had no sympathy with the County and thought it would be very much better if every thing was . worked by the local bodies. The chairman then put the resolution, which was carried unanimously. A committee wts formed to obtain the signatures to the petition of ratepayers, consisting of Messrs E. Linton, W. Bell, W. H. Lash, W. Fergusson, with power to add to their .lumber. i Mr James Linton of Balraerstoi* was i ■present, and addressed the meeting at .-some length on the subject of separation.
