Received February 7, 2 p.m.] Melboubne, This Day. The political speeches made last night gave the first intimation of a probable coalition between Constitutionalist and Liberals. Mr Gillies speaking at Avoca, denounced the ingratitude of tbe Government. The feeling of the country, he said, was in favor of a strong Governi meut, capable of practical legis ation and composed of reasonable men. Graham Berry sooke at Geelong, and announced he would defend the Education Act against all assailants. The tone of his speech was somewhat ambiguous, but it is believed that he is not averse to a coalition with the Constitutionalists. The number of Ministerial candidates announced for the general election is comparatively small, and it is generally considered certain that the Government will be defeated. London, Feb 6. A vacancy having occurred in the representation of Haddingtonshire, in the House of Commons, owing to the succession of Lord Elcho to tbe Karldom of Wemyss on the death of the late Earl, an election took place to-day and resulted in the return of I ord Elcho, eldest son of the pr ..sent Earl, by a large majority over his opponent, a Conservative candidate. T. M. Healy, M.P. for Wixford, has resigned his seat in the House of Commons. Capk- o .*n, February 6. The Houses Assembly have f assed a resolution approving < f the withdrawal of Cape the Government from Basuto--lud but d( minding that details should be presented to the House of the proposed settlement of the future of that territory. St. Petebsbubg, February 6. An Imperial ukase has been issued summoning the chief of nobility, the preficts, and Russian princes, to the Czar's coronation, at Moscow, in May next.
