MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Cham* bers, Foxton, yesterday. Present-TCrs Rockstrow (Chairman), Bruce, Mcßeth, Gray, and MeLennan. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. 'Ihe following correspondence was read ; — From A- Falloon covering cheque for ensuing quarter. From treasurer of Wanganui Harbor Board covering cheque £140. From Halcombe Town Board re subsidy and license fee. From Colonial Secretary's office, for list of existing Road Districts. Telegram from MrKirkwood re advertising Licensing Committee. From Messrs Haultain, Sherwill, Costall, Returning Officers, re election matters. From Mr Tomlinson re his dismissal as Returning Officer. From Rangitikei County Council, request for cheque, £16 6s 6d. From Mr Ellerm, re his amount of deposit and dogs registered. From Mr Paul, Kiwitea, a request for road expenditure. From W.Phyn, Kiwitea, request for road expenditure. From Mr Hoe, re his dismissal as Returning Officer. . lelegrams from Crs Fry and Linton, for leave of absence. From Treasury, > c Foxton-Otaki road, Ist payment of £20 14s 6d. The reports of the overseers of the northern and southern ridings were received. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Rdck-y strow, seconded hy Cr Gray, That leave of absence be granted to Crs Fry, Linton and Sanson, for present sitting. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Mcßeth, seconded by Cr Bruce, That the Chairman and mover be a oommittee to wait on the Wanganui Harbor Board to consider the 5 per cent charged by this Oouncil for certain works done. Cr Mcßeth explained the matter at length, and stated that since the expenditure had been incurred and the work done the W anganui Harbor Endowment Block had been tacked on to the Kiwitea and it was unfair to saddle the Kiwitea Riding with the expenses which shodd, he contended, be borne by the whole County. . Resolved, on the motion of Cr McLonnan, seconded by Cr Bruce, that the claim of the late rate collector, Mr Mowlem he held over for discussion at next meeting Resolved, on the motion of Cr Mcßeth* seconded by Cr Gray, That the letters of of Messrs Pbyn and Paul be referred to Cr Mcßeth, to report upon at next meeting. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Bruce, seconded by Cr Mcßeth, That Mr Bray be instructed to prepare plans and specifications and call for tenders for the erection of a bridge over the Mangaone Stream on the Karere road, tenders to be in at next meeting. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Bruce, seconded by Cr Mcßeth, That fresh tenders for the supply of metal for tho roads of the Taonui riding be called for, tenders to be in by next meeting. Resolved, on the motion of CrGray, seconded by Cr Rockstrow, That tenders be called for working the Foxton Ferry from Ist April, 1883, to 31st Maroh, 1884, tenders to bein by next meeting. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Mcßeth, seconded by Cr Gray, That the tender of £7 from Mr Currin for collecting the dog tax in tbe Kiwitea riding be accepted. Resolved, on the motion ot Cr MeLennan, seconded by Cr Gray, That the tender of £15 from Mr J. Ellerm for collection of dog tax in the Oroua riding be accepted. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Bruce, seconded by Cr Mcßeth, That Mr H. Graff be appointed slaughter house inspector for the Taonui riding for tho ensuing twelve months. Resolved, on the motion of Cr M'Betb, V seconded by Cr That Mr Bray be appointed slaughter house inspeotor for the Manchester and Kiwitea ridings. Accounts amounting to ff!W were passed for payment. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Bruce, seconded by Cr MeLennan, That tenders for the repairs and additions to the Awahuri Bridge be called for, according to plan 8 prepared. Tenders to be in by next meeting. Kesolved, on the motion of Cr Bruce, seconded by Cr MeLennan, That tho Chairman be authorised to call a special meeting to take steps in connection with the Roads and Bridges Construction Act on receipt from Government of reply to , application. The Counoil then adjourned till tha first Tuesday in March.
