MR.G. ME TARD IN FRANCE.

j It will bo ii^eivstinEj to the many Mfriendsof Mr Gabriel \l»>t rd in Palmer-' ston and Feilding. to know of the strange fate that awailed liim on his arrival in Paris. We cannot do better than pub- : lish an extract from a letter received by a fellow townsman, in which, after des-, cribing his adventures "en voi/aqe" via Suez Canal, he writes :- J " After stopping, a week at Rome, another week at Pisa,: ■another week at Mikno, and Genoya, we; arrived at Naples, and from Naples' we proceeded to Paris overland. After 48 hours' travelling in an express train we arrived in my native city, Paris. Now I come to the most unpleasant part of my letter for me. As you know, we came back to get some money which had been left us. "But where the fun (no! rather not "the fun") comes in, we had to produce papers to prove our identity. My father had no trouble, but I had, having gone away at •the time I should have been a soldier. To cut the. matter short, to get the papers necessary, I hud to surrender myself to the military authorities, who certainly •gave me all the papers 1 wanted to get the money; and I have got it, but also 2<l hours notice to re-join the 28th regiment, -where I should 'have served my time. So here I am a .soldier for 12 months from the 2a<t of' 'OcteUer, 1832; luckily my regiment is stationed in lans, so I am able to do •pretty well as I like. Being a soldier here'is not so pleasant as it w-as in apt. Lethbridge's company in ; Feilding." Mr Metard promises in his nest letter to .give some of his further experiences in France, and we will endeavor to place ..•hem before our readers.
