CONFERENCE OF LOCAL BODIES.
- ■' m i In accordance with the terms of a circular issued by the Manawatu Hignway ! Board, representatives of the various ! Manawatu County local bodies, attended a meeting held at the Highway Board office, at Palmerston, on Monday last. The ridings represented were, Kiwitea, Taonui, and Manchester— Messrs Macarthur, Loudon, Linton, Davies, Williamson, Newcombe, and Englis being present. Mr Skerman presided. Mr Macarthur spoke at length on the subject of Road Boards v the County Council. He was followed and supported by Mr Linton. These gentlemen were the proposer and seconder of the following resolution which was carried unanimously: — That this meeting is of opinion that the local bodies in the three northern ridings of Taonui. Manchester, and Kiwitea, should take immediate steps, by cilhn public meetings or otherwise, to procure the separation of these ridings from the Manawatu County, nnd their j formation into n separate County, wtth a view to suspending tbe Counties Act, and working under the Highway Board and Towu Board only. On the motion of Mr Linton seconded * by Mr Willi .mson the following resolu- i tion was passed, That the copies of the I fercjoing resolution be forwarded to the Road Boards of Otaki, Sandon, and Carnarvon, and Foxton Town Board, Manchester, Kiwitea and Foxton Road Boards, and Halcombe Town Boards." Mr Macarthur proposed, and Mr Linton seconded, That the Road Boards of Manawatu, Manchester, Kiwitea, and the Halcombe Town Board, be asked to call public meetings of the ratepayers of their respective districts for the purpose of electing tlieir opinion on the advisability of separating from the Manawatu County for the purpose of working under tlie Road Boards and Town Boards only." Carried unanimously. It is proposed by Mr Engles, seconded by Mr R. Loudon, and carried unanimously- "JThat a committee be appointed, consisting of Messrs Macarthur, Williamson, Linton, and Skerman, to draw up a petition to give effect to the first resolution, and to attend the different meetings to explain matters, and to obtain signatures." It was arranged that the Committee should meet on Tuesday next, at noon, at the office of the Manchester Highway Board. The conference terminated with a vote of thanks to the Chairman. — Manawatu Times.
