SHOCKING MURDER IN SCOTLAND.
As the people were leaving the churches in Montrose on a recent Sunday morning, an infuriated man was observed rushing along thf streets brandishing an axe. He made for the Suspension Bridge, and ascend- , ing the parapet, leaped into th* Ksk below, a height of sixty feet. Boats were put off to his assistance, and he ww» soon rescued, still holding the axe He said he had killed two devils, but had five yet to kill. The incident created much excitement, which increased when it was learned that the man, who was identified as James White, a butcher, had actually con>Biitted one murder, and a tempted to commit another. At one o'clock, without any provocation, he struck his wife with the axe. killing her instantaneously Immediately ! he ran to the house of'his mother-in-law, and having -struck her repeatedly wrth the same instrument, -iied to the Suspension Bridge to commit suicide. The mother-in-law is so dreadfully mangled that her death is expected. White, who is fifty years old, has been peou liar in his manner lor some time. He' took part in the American civil war, and was for a time a member of the Metropolitan Police Foroe. His wife was only thirty-eight. >he leaves six children.' Her mother is seventy years of age. The murderer has been -committed to I Dundee prison.
