A TOWN CLERK IN TROUBLE.
At the Dunedin PoiiceCourt cm Thursday, J- M. Massey, formerly Town Clerk And Treaiurer, was charged with having, ■on or about October 12th, 1881, stolen ttwo debentures each valued £100, the of the C"ty Corporation. His •wife wu also charged with receiving such .debentures knowiag them to be stolen. Mr Stout, who appeared for the pro6ecu. ttion, stated that altogether the amount anvolved was about £3300, and in apply- , ing for c remand he -consequently asked £or heavy bail. The remand was granted {or ft week, and bail allowed amounting an Massey'« case to £2400 and Mrs Massey's case to £1000. The arrest of (the prisoners caused great excitement. This Day. i 'This afternoon Mr and Mrs Massey were admitted to bail, the sureties being the Rer. Mr Fitchett and tne Rev. Mr Berry- The case is exciting great interest here. Later. '■■ Only Mrs Massey was bailed last night, but it is expected Massey will be released to-day.
