FEILDING BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Thursday, January 4, 1883. A meeting of the Feilding Borougli Council was held in the Council Cham boon Thursday evening last, when thei< were present— The Mayor, (in the chair} Crs Thompson, Rutherford, "Lowers aiiJ Higgin. The minutes of the previous meetinc were read and confirmed. A letter was read from Mr Lyne aneni applying for a culvert to be put in. The letler was referred to the Public "Works Committee. The Finance Report was then read :-- Accounts passed — Town Clerk, £9 Os 8d: G. C. Hill, Engineer, £4 16s 9d; Beaufort, £2 4s 4d; Green, wages, £8 16s ; D. R Lewers, stores, 14s ; Palmar, stores, 4s Id ; Kirton and Curtis, printing, £2 Us 8d ; Hodges, ranger, £2 I7s 2ii ; Gosling, notice board, 12s ; Smith, £69 14s 6J. Total, £101 3s 3d. A report from the Public Works .Committe was read as follows : — Your Corri mittee beg to report that they have interviewed Messrs Hoots and Crichtou, relative to the proposed improvement in Grey and Manchester-streets, by tl: infilling in of the drains opposite the Exce' sior Stores, and the extension of Ma: chesler-street culvert, and have tostai; that the above-named gentlemen havo submitted the following proposition to the Council for consideration, viz: Thai they agree to carry out the proposer works themselves, in accordance with specifications to be furnished by tht Council, and under the supervision of its Engineer ; and are prepared to contribute £20 towards the cost, the balance of the estimates supplied by the Engineer to be deducted from rates due from lime to time on the property immediately benefitted by the said works. Your Committee consider the offer a very favorable one to the Council, and recommend that it be accepted. *An estimate of the cost of the proposed works by Mr Hill is attached to this report. With regard to tho condition of the creek crossing Denbigh-street, and other matters reported'on by the Inspector of Nuisances, referred' to your Committee, we have to. report that the late dry season, having removed- the danger arisingfrom these sources, no action can be advbed ffith regard thereto. ♦Extension of culvert, £14 ; small culvert in Grey»streer, £3 10s ; earthworth, £11; Engineer, £1 10s. Total, £30. F. Lethbbidge, Chairman P.W.C. Cr Lewers said that the question of dealing with stagnant water should no longer be shelved. The pond behind his private residence was very objectionable, and probably dangerous to health. Proposed by Cr Lewers, seconded by Cr Higgin, : hat the clause referring to nuisances in the report presented by the Public Works Committee be struck out. — Carried. The report was then adopted as amended. The Mayor stated that the Committee appointed waited on' the Manchester Higiiway Board, and the Chairman said* that nothing could be done until a future period. Cr Thompson said that the settlers in Marl borough - street were completely locked in, and would require foot bridges over tue Makino. Cr Lewers stated that the settlers in Pdole-strcet suffered; therefore their case should be embodied in the report of the Public Works Committee. . Proposed by Cr Thompson, seconded by Cr Lewers, That the Publio Works Committee report on some urgent improvements needed in Marlborough and Poole streets at the next meeting of the Council. — Carried. The Council then adjourned to the 18th inst.
