At the Sandhurst Assizes in 1830, two lads named Punch and Corbis were sentenced to death for an alleged criminal assault. 'Ihe sentence was commutted to ten years' penal servitude. The girl concerned has now confessed that they were not guilty, and the prisoners- have been set at liberty. On Christmas Day Michael Leonard Oakleigh shot a man known as Harry Ivison. He deliberately loaded a gun and fired the charge into the head and neck of Ivison. The murderer has been arrested. Adelaide, Jan. 5. His Excellency Sir Wm. Jervois was entertained at luncheon here to-day prior to his departure for New Zealand. In replying to the toast of his health he dwelt upon the prospects of the colony in an able and exhaustive speech, and expressed confidence in its future development. Sydxey, This Day. Mr Alexander Stuart has succeeded in I forming a Ministry. It is generally considered that the new Ministry is weak, and unlikely to hold office for any length of time. Received January 6, 1 p.m.] Adelaide, This Day. At a public luncheon to Sir William Jervois, yesterday, 180 persons were present, including Ministers and Judges and leading citizens. His Excellency, in his speech, urged caution in borrowing, favored immigration, and advocated the federation of the Australian colonies.
