PALMERSTON SPORTS.
The Friendly Societies' Sports at Palmerston, an New Year's Day, prored a great suceess, upwards of 1000 persoas being present, amongst them being a large number of Feilding visitors. The weather, was all that eould be desired, sod the various events were well contested. The secretary, Mr West, was untiring in tho discharge of his Arduous duties, /rad a meed of praise is also due to the gentle* men who acted as judges, starter, and .stewards. Subjoined is a list of the pric-
cipil events : — Friendly Societies' Handicap—Bennett, 1 ; Bush, 2 ; Sheeran, 3. "Walking Handicap.— This was the best «vent of the day, Eelfit (Peilding man) winning after. a hard struggle, Knight being second. Standing Long Jump — Hughes, 1; Laing, 2. The Baby Show created great amusement, for which there were 22 entries. The first prize *f ell to Mrs Cavanagh's baby, 6 weeks old, and the second prize to Mrs F. Collins' baby, aged 6 months. One Mile Handicap — TJxete jgejre three entries for this event, which tesulfced as follows z Bennett, 1 ; Belfit, 2. The third man (Bush) fell out of the race. Eunning High Jump — Laing, 1; Hughes, 2. The sports con«luded at an early hour. Three hearty cheers were given for Mr James Linton for his kindness in placing his grounds Mt the disposal of the sports committee.
