THE PALMERSTON CHORAL SOCIETY'S CONCERT.

The above society gave its first concer on Wednesday last in the Foresters Hall, and though of course, as in all firs attempts, signs of weakness were shefvn yet on the whole we must congratulate the members ou their success. The concerted music throughout displayed can - ful training and reflects considerable credit on MrG W. Russell, who wielded the baton. Before commencing the concert, the President of the Society, Mr Fritz Jenssen, came forward and' briefly addressed those present on behalf of the Society. He also requested that there sl.ould be no encores as the programme was a very long one. The audience, which, by the bye, was not such a numerous one as we would like to have seen, were careful in their attention to Mr Jenssen's request, thougli many seemed to restrain themselves with great difficulty on more than one occasion. The applause was, however, most enthusiastic throughout. We regret that the space at our command will not allow us to notice each item, but we cannot refrain from noticing one or two. The gem of the evening was decidedly Verdi's beautiful air "Ah ehe la morte," which was exquisitely rendered by Mrs Snow. The opening overture consisted of a fantasia on airs from "' La Traviata," and was played by Miss Atkinson in her usual faultless manner. The second part commenced with a piano duet by the Misses Atkinson and Skennan, and we can say that we have never heard those ladies play with greater effect. Arthur Sullivan's song " Sweethearts," was charmingly rendered by Miss Young, as also was the duet " Lovely Star" by Mrs Watson and Miss Young. Mr Geo. Russell was very successful in his rendering of " The Sailor's Grave," and we cannot conclude our remarks without a word of praie to Miss Atkinson for her excellent accompaniments during the evening, in spite of the very awkward position of the instrument. We sincerely hope it will not be long ere the society again comes before the public, Imd^-wcr"-"'*"^ wouia advise tnose lovers of good music who were absent on Wednesday not to " offend" again, as they may be sure that they are missing a good treat.
