RAILWAY ORNAMENTATION.
—♦- The action of the stationmaster nt Fordell, in laying out the ground attached to his dwelling house as a garden for fruits, flowers, and vegetables, is likely to have a beneficial effect on the whole of the Patea- Manawatu line of railway. It is proposed to have a nursery formed at some station suitable for the purpose, where ornamental and fruit trees may be cultivated and distributed to the various stations for planting in the land near and about the residences t £ station-masters. The surface men would be able to gire attention to these tree?, so that they would not be allowed to go to ruin from neglect of any stationmaster whose residence was only of a temporary character. In the mean time, if this scheme is carried out — and from what we know on the subject there is every probability that it will be during the next twelve months — it will have the effect of making the Patea-Manawatu railway line the most beautiful line in the colony. The fruitful nature of the soil will give such rapid returns a« to encourage individual station-masters in making their garden more beautiful than those of their fellows. The money value will also be a considerable item to be considered, and will make appointments on this line an object of ambition among officers in other parts of the colony. To the gentleman in charge of Fordell station will belong the honor of the movement.
