LOCAL AND GENERAL.

m> The Presbyterians of Feilding are about to erect a handsome and commodious manse for the residence of the Minister, in Grey-strct. Mr Eedpath has a 6-acve paddock in Halcombe, laid down witb linseed. The crop looks in splendid condition, and wdl doubtless yiold a profitable return on the outlay. At a meeting of the parishioners of St John's Church, Feilding, held at the Immigration Barracks on Monday evening last, A. Dawson, Esq., was elected j Churchwarden,- vice A. It. T. Haultain, Esq., resigned. Bowes, the victim of the fatal mishap on last Saturday week, at Wanganui was buried on Sunday last. .Amongst the mourners at the funeral was the man Thomas, who was the unfortunate cause of Bowes's death. The appeal case against the decision of the _.M. in the case of Halcombe and Sherwill v. Smart, Bros., will be heard in Banco, at tbe Supreme Court sittings, to be held at Wellington on the jJUth inst. The appointment of G. W. Grabham, Esq., M.D., as Inspector of Lunatic Asylums and Hospitals of New Zealand, is gazetted. This gentlemen arrived in Dunedin some days ago, and has already entered upon the fulfilment of his onerous duties. We are requested to state that the cases of fish-poisoning which occurred on Thursday lait were not the result of eating fish sold by our local fish-monger, Mr Andresen. The fish which did the harm were sold by a fish-hawker from an adjacent township. A piece of petty revenge was perpetrated in Sandon a few days ago. A horse belonging to a county laborer was found to be seriously mutilated. The mane and tail were cropped close, and one ear was partially cut off. We understand that the author of this atrocity is known, and will be prosecuted at once. After some delay the Patea vestry have at length decided to build a new church in place of the somewhat dilapidatedlooking structure now. existing. At a special meeting held during the Lord Bishop's recent visit to the district, it was decided to accept the design by Mr F. de J. Clere from among those sent in as being the "best as regards strength, elegance and accommodation." According to Mr Clere's design, which is somewhat similar in plan to our church in Feilding, the new building will seat 350 persons, and it is. estimated that the cost will be about £800. Tbe style adopted is " Early English" Gothic and in this respect it will differ from the Feilding Church, which iv "Perpendicular" Gothic. Mrs Dungan, relict of that popular and well-known journalist, the late Mr Dungan, has recently moved into new and commodious premises erected for her stationery business, by Mr J. P. Leary, adjoining Mr Linton's Land Mart, Palmerston. The bnilding is a very handsome structure, and adds considerably to the fine appearance of the business premises in that portion of the Square. The shop is large, lofty, and well ventilated, and the necessary fittings, &c, conducive to the convenience of Mrs Dungan's numerous customers, are all that could be desired. Mrs Dungan has recently added to her large and varied stock of fancy goods, periodicals, and general literature, the whole now forming one of the best assorted stocks of stationery to be found in the district. When we wish Mrs Dungan all success in her new venture, we are confident our wish will be endorsed by her many friends all over the Manawatu.

Mr G. Carson was yesterday reelected Mayor of Wanganui, without opposition. Ferretts are declared natural enemies of the rabbit, and are, in consequence, protected by law. The heat in Melbourne has be-.-n very severe lately. On tlie Prince of Wales' Birthday the temperature wa< 100 dog. in the shade md; 143 in the sun. Messrs D.dgetly and Co (Dunedin) huve received a cable mess ige from London, dated the 17th instant, to the effect that the market for frozen mutton has advanced, and the meat is now 7d per lb for best quality. The following tenders were received for the Manutahi plalelaj'ing contract, Foxton - New Plymouth Kail way : — Acj cepted, Anthony Nathan, Hawera, £4247 ; declined, Jay and Haynes, Palmerston, £5081 ; Mace and Bassett, Patea, £5441 ; Daniel Scalley, Wanganui, £0198. On dit that it is the intention of some of the oldest settlers in the town to make arrangements for the celebration of the anniversary of Feilding, i.e., the first settlement in t c Manchester Block. Such a movement would we doubt not meet with considerable favor. Musk is mentioned by a correspondent of the Lancet as an exceedingly eflicacious remedy for whooping-cough, although very expensive. He says that it controls the spasmodic paroxysms of the cough, aud is the only drug which he has found to be of any particular value in the treatment of the disease. We regret to have to chronicle the death of .Mr Seaton, M.H.R. for the Peninsula, Dunedin, who was thrown out of his buggy when driving and killed. Mr Seaton was an old settler in Otago. where he was universally respected. At one time he visited England as emigration agent. He was a skilled botanist. Mr Jennings, who has been for some time employed at the Kairakau mill, was thrown from his horse on Saturday last, and had one of his legs broken. He was brought on to Feilding, and now lies at the Denbigh Hotel, under the treatment of Dr Johnston. Mr Jennings is steadily progressing towards complete recovery. A Natal paper mentions an affecting iiacidcnt connected with the Transvaal war. Major Anderson, of the 50th Regiment, tells the story. He says a terribly wounded officer was on the point of having his " lights blown out" by a Boer, when the former, in despair, made i lhe Masonic sign of distress. The Boer, who was a Mason, understood it, and under a heavy fire carried his brother Mason to a place of safety. We learn that Mrs Hanipson, the cele brated evangelist, will be able to give an address at the Forester's Hall, Palmerston North, on Monday evening next, while on her way to Napier. All those in favor of Christian work are cordially invited. As will be seen by the correspondence published in our last issue from Sir W. Fox, and the Revs R. Fennel 1 and Sadler, there is every probability of this talented lady visiting tlie Manawatu on her return from Australia. There is also every likelihood of Feilding being chosen as the centre of her good ministrations in this district. The New Zealand Times says: — A number of intending subscribers to Ada .Mantua* consultation, residing at Auckland, were nicely had by the postal authorities. Ada won't be caught by taking registered letters, and therefore money for tickets had to be sent iv the ordinary way. The postmaster, however, acting under instructions, registered all letters addressed "Ada Mantua, Dunedin," and when they reached their destination the addresses would not take delivery. The consequence was that the missives went to the Dead I. etter Otlice, where the £l's were carefully taken out, and paid into the colonial exchequer. The would-be investors are now trying to get tlieir cash back, and probably they will succeed after circumlocutory correspondence.
