FEILDING SPORTS.
* TO THE EDtTOE OF THE FEILDING STAR. Sik, — I was very .sorry to liear (he decision of the public meeui'g held on Saturday evening, to the effect that the day after Boxing Day had been appointed on which to hold the annual Feilding sports. I think it a Tory unwise mode of procedure for the day to bo altered. The sports have boon held here on Boxing Day for the past six years, and there are a groat number of country people in the habit of ctrning to Feilding on that day. Now that the day has been altered, those people will, undoubtedly go to Palmers ton, and the day after Boxing Day, (the day that was set apart for Awahuri, by the bye,) being no public holiday, people will resume their various occupations, and the sports will be a failure. It in an understood thing that i Foxton, i'almerston, and Fending should ' have their own days. That sot apart for Feilding was Boxing Day. Why alter it ? Simply because some two or three " horsey geatlemen" cons dered it would be bad policy, etc., for Feilding to interfere with i'almerston ! I think Palmerston is to blame for not keeping to the day set apart for it — Anniversary Day. I maintain thut our day should not be altered. Let Feilding hold its own. The sports last year we c a success in spite of the races at Palmerstou First, Pahuerston has to be considered, then I Bulls, and finally, the dar appointed is a i working day, no holday at all, and a day when people will be fatigued, after enjoying Xinas Day and Boxiag Day, and all their spare cash for pleasure spent, in some place other than Feilding. Already, I think, the secretary has met with many refusals for subscriptions, owing entirely to the day being altered. I say, again, let us keep to our own day and the sports are bound to be a success. Hoping some influental gentlemen will call a public meeting for Saturday eTening next to consider an alteration in the day on which to hold our sports, — 1 am, &c, Feilding, Oct. 24. Boxing Day. [ ur correspondent should have attended the meeting on Saturday night, where his voice and Tote would have been of souie use in preventing the alteration. Ed. F. S»3
