PALMERSTON v. MANCHESTER The first match of the season was played at Feilding, on Saturday last. he. tween the above clubs. The weather which was anything but promising during tbe early morning, cleared off about 9.3 C a.m., and a really beautiful day followed. The Palmerston team arrived at the Feilding station by the 9.10 a.m. train, and the wickets were pitched at 11. 30 a.m. Sherwill, as captain of the Feilding won the toss, and sent in Nix and G. Bartholomew, tc the bowling of Thompson and Salmon. The former bowler was at first anything but on the wicket and runs were tbe consequence of his want of il form." However, this soon chang. tl, and both bowlers settling down steadily lo their work, the Feilding wickets soon began to fall. The weak point of the home team seemed to be a want of judgment in running. The batting of howley and George Bartholomew, however, deserves considerable praise. The first innings of the Palmerston team presents but little that was remarkable, except that in spite of the really excellent bowling of Fearon. Niv. and Roe. the runs came very freely, AVatson, Thompson, Salmon, and Macquarrie, showing excellent '-b-ilii.ig form." The second in nings of ih. FOiding men was a deeded improvement, on the first, the batting ot Nix being i-eyoiid all praise, that gentleman, put! ing together tlie fine score < f 37. During the last innings of the Palmerston team, the darkness interfered much with the play. At 6.15 p.m., ihe wickets were drawn, the game being decided iv favor of Palmerston, on the first in.iin_,e. Sul joined are the scores : AI a nch ksteb— lst Innings. G.
