A two-roomed cottage on Oldwine's ■'oad was destroyed by fire last night. Insurances are £'100. The clothes left to dry in front of the fire had ignited and caused the fire. There are two divorce cases to be heard on Monday. Diphtheria exists at Kaipoi, and (.he public school was closed to-day for fumigation. The South Belt school, Christchurch, which was closed two weeks for the same reason, is now open again. Patea, This Day. The s.s. Wakatu, from Wellington, on entering the channel yesterday morning, was carried on to some detached blocks at the end of the breakwater ; westerly breeze was blowing. A hole was knocked in her wnist, starboard side. Damage not thought to be considerable. Auckland, This Day. An old woman named Mary Gallagher, of Onehunga, died at the door of the Auckland Hospital while being lifted out of an express. Dr Scott gave a certificate of death from natural causes, accelerated by want of comfort. It is contemplated, if Sir George Grey and the Auckland Institute agree, to place Sir George Grey's library, given to city, in the institute temporarily, the City Council defraying expense of accommodation and fittings. Wellington, This Day. The appointment of Mr E. T. Conolly as Minister of Justice is formally gazetted to-night. Another breach of promise case, in which £'1000 damnges are claimed, is on the tapis. Plaintiff is a barmaid, and the defendant a publican in the city.
