BOROUGH COUNCIL ELECTIONS.

The election for three Borough Cottri- • cillors which .was held on. Thursday last, went off in- the calmest manner. There was no excitement, and very little interest appeared to be taken by the Burgesses. The poll was declared' by the Returning Officer, Mr Hill, at the Council chambers, at haif»past. 6 o'clock, and was as follows : — ' Sherwill, H. L 72 , Goodbehere, S. ... ' ... 66 Thompson, S. Arnott, W • 4 .Mr Sherwill thanked the electors, fsr putting' him at the head of the poll, and declared his intention of doing his best to '.advance the interests of the Borough by every means in his power. He w,ould go into the Council untrammelled 'by any pledges or promises that might have been extracted from him if-4ie had called a public meeting. He would also be at per- ■ fe 4 liberty to represent the Burgesses as ;. seemed to him wisest as circumstances arose. At any... time, that his supporters— wqre dissatisfied, with him, he would most willingly resign thte position if caile'd^upon to do so. He again thanked them for -^ the honorable position in which they. had <4B placed him. : ' l Mr Pairfield Thompson addressed the Biirgesses in a few words. - lie. thankedthose who had voted for him, and he also thanked those who had not voted for him, as he was thereby saved a lot of worry mm and trouble. . • Mr Sherwill proposed a vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, which was carried by acclamation.
