LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Borough Council has decided to hold over any loan proposals until t c election of the three new members. "Messrs V. and J. Bartholomew are now forwarding to Christchuruh some splendid specimens of matai timber, to be used for bridgework. Our Wanganui correspondent informs u-s. that l>r W. G. Graham lias been appointed Inspector of .Lunatic Asylums for the Colony of >'ew Zealand, rice Dr Skae, deceased. Mr and Mr< Macarlhur left Feilding on Thursday via Fuxion. en mute for the Hot Lakes. We wish them a pleasant trip, and hope that Mrs Macarthur's health will be benefitted by the change. Mr Macarthur will return in about a fortnight to Feilding. At the recent meeting of the Wanganui Education Board. Mr Snrlson urged the erection of a school in the upper Makino Itoad,- The Buard decided that the requisite steps should be faken towards building a school in the locality named. Mr Snelson is deserving oP great credit for his exerliims in getting a much needed "jvant supplied on behalf of the residents of the upper Makino district. On Wednesday afternoon a horse was knocked over by the engine attached to the Foxtou train. The breaks were put down, >uid every effort, was niade by the driver to avoid the collision. Some of the pas---sengers were seriously alarmed, and jumped out of the train, fearing that the ohirriagos Were likely ■■to get off the line;. Fortunately the horse was caught in the cow-cafcher and thrown on one side, "without any mishap to the Train. We hear it is the intention of the Makino burgesses to ask Mr W. Corpc to offer himself as one of the candidates at the forthcoming election of threi? Councillors for the Feildiug Borough. Mr Corpe 'is' a man of good sense and sound liberal principles, is highly res^ pected by all who know him, and with hi'Sjiiast experience in; mTnucrjjnl -nratjers riii the '"Wairara'pa he should mirke a good Councillor. We believe there would not be much doubt of his being elected should he consent to stand. j All hough the proposal made by Cr Loudon that the Council should grant | 1"50,', towards Che "• expenses of a Fire Brigade for Feihling was rejected, yet it was evident from the tone of the Council} lors.w he. spoke on the sujrject a .majority favored tlie vote, but that the Borough funds would not at present admit of the expenditure. The Mayor stated that he believed the liberality of the general public would enable the Brigade to be "formed and fireengincs purchased, without the. funds of the ratepayers being en- 1 -croSrrhed upon. '- ■ --■ '• • \ To-day the return match, Wanganui vl Manawatu, will be plaj'ed on the Wanganui ground. The ball will be kicked at 2.45 precisely. We -hope the united team will do their best to wipe out the remembrance of the de'feit'fjlioy suffered- from the Wanganui men at' Palmerston. . The cartoon issued by the Wellington Advertiser, on August, 26th deserves .special notice. It .is. entitled ".IJie Slaughter of the Innocents," and caricatures the various members of the Minisi,yy fiigaged in, the massacre. Bryce is seen 'just' a^ lie 'lias cut ofi: the head of the Native Bills; Kolleston is in the act "of "stabbing the Land Bill; Atkinson is' playing dire havoc with the Electric Jtfg'itfj Lbc.al"^ot'errmieiit, Insurance p|oiJosals, Rating'and County Bills; and John'ston is putting' j an ' edge on his' Iciiife to cut. the throat, of the Direct Steam Bill. Tlte Gold Mines BiH_ is tivyii.ig ; '.o; sneak away behind, while the cunning 'little Li- . censing I3iU.,is jp,ak,m>{ its e^ci\pepvvi'[the barrier looking the funniest of tiie lot. Above, and on the rightof l/hc gifoup, are fieen Whit taker and- Oliver. Whittaker, , (log) : " Steady, boys, don't kill 'em out-, right j/we'll want some of 'enl again next session." The cartoon is altogether very good, and d<:4fiviug oEigivat praise.
The following blocks of land— Mann- ( watu, N6s^ y, a-uit-TT wjll bi' dealt with ut^tlie Native La ruts Court, to be held at Oarterton, ion -September 6th. There will be a meeting this evemu^of the Fire Brigade members in tho Commercial Eooui of the Denbigh Hut el, aL 8 o'clock, p. ui., sharp, to reoeive ,a report from (he committee of canvassers. i We remind our re/ulers that a meeting will be held this evening at the Denbigh Hotel Sample Rooms, when the Borough t'ouncil Bye-laws, riilating 1 to. tlia iutpounding of stray cattle will be considered. Mr A. B. Douglas left Hal combe last evening en route for Kngland, which lie purposes to visit for a few mouths. A good number of his friends witnessed his departure, and gave him three hearty cheers as the train left the station! The Manawafu Herald states that Mr J. T. Stewart, District Engineer, started yesterday morning to make a preliminary survey of the line for the proposed tramway from Foxton to Sandon. This gentleman will also fix the places for the different sidings on the line. We have had the pleasure of inspecting some elegant articles of furniture turned out by Mr Kiimscy, of Halcombe, to the ordev of a leading resident there. As specimens of the beautifully figured woods of the Manawatu bush, alid "of artistic colonial workmanship, they, can scarcely be excelled. The schooner May will take in her cargo of white pine at Wellington,, and not at Wanganui. as previously reported. The whole of the timber will be forwarded by rail to Foxton, and from thence shipped by steamer to Wellington. Messrs Corpe and Son forwarded, a quantity from Mak l ho yesterday. The enfertainment at the Kiwit ca'last night was a gr^at success, despite .the. heavy rain which fell. The performers were evidently well up to their work, and (heir f efforts <ga/re- general satisfac- j tion. The ball which followed was well j .attended, ;and .dancing , was kept up. with great spirit until nearly daylight. The purveying was unexceptional,' and reflects great credit on Messrs Summers & Co. The Gaming and Lotteries Act Amendment Bill was withdrawn in committee I last Wednesday. It wilL be. introduced j again next .session, and a large majority,. . of members were in favor of the measure, but it was impossible, to make any progress against the determined' opposition of the majority. Mr Steward, who had charge of the Bill in the House, agreed to withdraw- it. We congratulate the citizens of Feilding on the fact that the Borough Couucii has agreed, to strike a penny rate for the Public Library. As, the, Government will largely supplement. th* amount ettatributed by the Borough, we have cv ry reason to believe i the- ratepayer's : Hvill/ heartily endorse the action of .the , t'ouncl. This resolution' "whs proposed' by C'r Johnston, to whom the thanks of the. reading public .are due.. -, ■ The attention of our readers is directed' to the preliminary advertisement of a, promenade concert to be held in the Town Hall, -on! Tliurscliiyvevimmfc, fche ! '7kL- l iiist.' The concert will be given by the members of the choir of St John's Church assisted by a number of local amateurs, who are: already established favorites ivitli Feilding audiences. We will refer again to; the subject in our next issue. | Wo are glad to learfl that;.Messrk It. 1 and E. Tingey, of Wanganui, have been; the successful tenderers far ibe work of, painting, paperliauging, and decorating' the new hotel now ttt course of erection: at Palmerstoji, of which r Mr,.LarcQmb > is the architect. We are satisfied' ttfafc. tfte "work could- not be put in t>fetter lidSids, and that when completed it will be a! satisfaction both, to the proprietor and' architect. .i■ ?y , .- /. '■'■'
