CONCERT AT TAONUI.
(FHOM OtTB OWN COEEESPONDENTi}' Avery pleasant and 'successful "'enter* tainment was given in the school-room on Friday evening last. In spite of a drizzling rain, which fell in the early part of the evening, the room- was--' almost* filled, and the *» audience showedfoleariy that they appreciated the effortspf the* various performers. Among the songs whach appeared to give most satisfaction, were " Come Lassies and Lads,""" by Mi-Dowl-ing; "Death of Andreas Hpffer," (in German), by Mr Hugli; " Geld;f *,6old ! Gold!" by Mr Symonds, and;'" Hearts and Homes," by Mr W. Bajley'. Mr E. H. Wright read " The Cor&nation," from the Ingoldsby- Legends, ' and obtained an encore, to which he responded with a most amusing recitation. Perhaps the gem of the evening, was a duet called "The Wind and the Harp," by Mrs Dowling and Miss Mahpn. The children gave the well-known chorus /' Let the Hills Resound," in capital time. Several pieces were *iery carefully ' recited by some of the young people, each of which reflected great credit ' on the performers. In addition to the above, the programme ' included several songs and' quartettes, a solo on the A.merican Organ, and a'duet between the organ and a violin: Miss Susannah Squall, a colored lady, gave a most exhaustive lecture on " Woman's Rights." " God Save the Queen," by the children, brought the entertainment to a close.
The Chairman (Mr Walter Bailey) conveyed the thanks of the School Committee tb the performers and the audience for their attendance.
The proceeds, amounting to £3 4s, were handed over to the School Committee to "help to defray the debt on the school [ organ.
I cannot close my report without a word of advice to some lads at the ehdi>f the room, who occasionally indulged in some silly and vulgar remarks. Such behaviour at an amateur entertainment is quite out of place, and ihe -School Committee have determined, should donduct of a similar character be repealed, the offenders will be promptly 'ejected from the premises, and 5 afterwards "'gro"ceeded against in a court PfjustlSer"''
