' | Thursday, July 20. Tlie ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Feildirig Borough Council <ras held at the Council Chambers, on Thursday evening hist. Present:— His Worship the Aiayor. Crs I hamson, Loudon, Higgin, Johnston, Lewers, and Xethbridge. His Worship the Mayor made the usual declaration. MINUTES. „ . ' Tn« minutes of the previous 1 meeting, were read and confirmed. His Worship then made a few remarks in connection with his to the position of Mayor. \ He craved the indulgence; qf Councillors for any littleerrors that might be noticeable, as he! felt new to,, the office. He considered there were Councillors better able to fill; the oosition than he\vas; but as he had; been elected to the office he would endeavor conscientiously to discharge the duties pertaltiing td his office with fairness and impartiality. He was; quite! prepared to resign ii any time should he be found wanting in, his duty. Cr Higgin, in a Few appropriate words, congratulated, the Mayor on his election.! Amongst several letters read was one from the proprietors of the Feilding Stab, in re advertising. The letter contained a proposal 'to do the Borough advertising at 3s per 1 inch for first insertion J and 2s per inch fir subsequent insertion, with a discount 0t.20 per cent Proposed by Crj Loudon, and seconded by Cr Lewers, that the proposal, to hold good for 12 months, be adopted.- - Carried. ,■ l - BOBOtjtfH BANGEE. Cr Lethbndge, as one of the Borough Eanger Committee, explained what steps had been taken by the committee. The committee met on Wednesday evening last, when the matter was fully gone into, but a difficulty arose as io the manner in whieh the. Eanger should be paid. After some discuss $ion. it w^s decided to write to the Town Clerk at Palmerston to ascertain the mode of payment . that . obtains with the Palmerston Ranger. Proposed by. Cr Leth bridge, and seconded by Cr Loudon, that the Ranger Committee be granted an extension of time. JUKI NO STREAM. J Cr Lethbridge raised the question of encroaching ou private property in carrying outlive w| rk. • ; : Cr Loudon did not consider the,nmttt;r so urgent as was Represented. ? ; The Mayor referred to the position of the Borough funds. He did nnf, think the present condition of their finances would warrant them in employing additional labour. . -. \ Cr Lewprs considered that unless any real diinger 'wa~#hkelr' l tb en stie 'there was no necessity to undertake the work; Cr, Johnston proposed, and Cr Lethbtidge seconded, that the Public Works Committee inspect those portions of 1 Grey-Street a"nd the if nkino Stream, between Defibigh and'Derby-streets, with reference to the removal of thr- trees and logs, and report at next meeting of the Council — Carried. . . MOBEiijht! Cr Higgin referred to the necessity that existed for tome steps being taken for lighting the town. He suggested that half-a-dozen lamps should be fixed in various parts of the Borough, end thought the}* would prove a boon to the inhabitants during the present dark nights. Cr Lewers warmly approved of the proposal, and /thought steps- should he taken towards lighting the town. Cr ?. Tompson l strongly opposed the movement. He considered half-a-dozen lamps would, be useless.; It would, inhis opiriion, tako 20 or 30 lamps to light the town properly. Cr Lethbridge and the Mayor suggested that the matter might be held o,ver till a future meeting. Cr Higgin withdrew his proposition. The Council then adjourned.
