FOREST PLANTING.
One of the most important subjects for the consideration of the country at large, and particularly the timber districts of the colony, is that of forest planting and' conservation. We notice by the latest
volume of "Hansard," that Mr Bracked, one of the Dunedin members, asked the I Government if they intend to take any j action with reference to the encouragement of forest planting in the colony ? The subject of forest planting, Mr Bkaceen observed, (id not receive half the attention its imp rtance deserved. | Unless steps were taken to encourage ! forest planting, New Zealand in a very ' few years would become a bald and bare country. Mr Rollkston replied that the Government during the past year had taken steps to encourage forest planting under the Forest Trees Planting Encouragement Act. In one pa,t of Otago a local body had taken up planting with | considerable success. A local board iu Canterbury had also done the same. The Government would be glad indeed if the local bodies would take up this matter, and would give every assistance they could.
