WAIKATC- WANGANUI RAILWAY.
PROPOSED NEW ROUTE. A Mr J. C Firth, in a letter in the Auckland Herald, proposes the following as an alternative line to the WaikatoTaranaki route. It is as follows : — Starting from Oxford, on the Rotorua line, new being surveyed, it would run up the Oraka Valley for four miles; then straight on through to Koroa Plain in s southerly direction for about fifteen mileß, whence it wonld incline to the westward, in order to round the Whakamaru Range; thence running up the valley of tde Waikato Hirer on a natural terrace till reaching the native tettlement of Ongoroto (just south of Whakamaru Range); about 30 miles from Oxford. At thit point it wonld cross the Waikato River, and, skirting the bate of Titiranpenga Mountain and Haurakia Range, would pass between the latter and Karangahape Range, about 65 miles from Oxford. From thit point to Wanganui, about 95 miles, is easy country; making a total distance, from Oxford to Wanganui, of about 160 miles. For these particulars I am indebted to a gentleman better acquainted with the route than any other person I know. I think it will be admitted that an alternative line is a reasonable and safe proposal.
