The Feilding Guardian. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21, 1880. REASSURING INDICATIONS.

As illustrating the fu urc prospects of the Colony, it is worth while noting the strides being token in the way ot' journalistic enterprise. Almost at the limits of civilization towards tho North—we mean liawera—two newspapers are on the point of being started, one by Mr Galvi.v, lately connected with tho Wellington Times, nrd the other by Mr J. Ivess, a veteran csiablisher of journals in remote and unlikely places. It is scarcely probablo that both will succeed, and one may have to give way, though the machinery for both is eu route, and neither speculator will hear ot probable failure, I he I’atca Mail is also to be taken over from the lessee by the proprietor, Mr Ivess, who is about to enlarge it and bring it i ut respectable tri-weeklv. The Wanganui Herald too is on the point of en--1 urging, an order we believe having been given /'or the reijtisito plant. That paper shoal 1 then under vigorous control, take up its position as tho paper of the coast, ami should soon become a very valuable property. The same proprietary also contemplate the establishment of a daily paper at Marton, between which and the present local journal there will doubtless be a keen struggle for supremacy. At Hulls, too, the inhabitants are insisting' upon having their own paper, and are offering good i ducements to any person starting. They say they have been persistently kept in the back ground by tile Marton paper, and this treutm mt they have resolved to resent by liberally supporting a paper pub.ish 'd in their own township. A gentleman from the •South is expected up in a lew days, and oil his being satisfied with the upport offered, the Hulls journal will lie at once lauiicbe 1 into existence, il'o should say that with energy and enterprise a successful future is before it, as o/ course Sauilon, Lower Uangitikoi, Carnarvon, ami all those districts will give it their patronage, mil general support. Du iho othoi hand we have nc i e of rapid depreciation of value in the same line. The Marton paper, that nearly two years ago, when u bi-weekly, and with none of the machinery which it now pos-

losses was all but sold for -fi 1,500. iineb then £dooo was asked, and now it is going a begging for a purchaser, at a ridiculously low price, which if wo mentioned we would scarcely be believed. Of course, the starting of a second paper at Marton and the probability of the new one at Hulls has na doubt contributed to tho rapid diminution of former value. Still, the enterprise displayed in other parts of the district in the direction of journalistic speculation, shows that great faith is manifested in the future, and the undoubted ultimate prosperity of the West Coast. The establishment of a newspaper is a serious and costly undertaking, and is rarely engaged in without some good show of success. The majority of people by whom opinions have been expressed on the subject maintain that we are ** over-papered” already, and yet there are two more about to be launched in ihc Rangitikei district, and the proprietary of each are sanguine of success. Unless the district promised well such costly enterprise would not be attempted, and when we see a heavy outlay being incurred in all cofidence of a sure and speedy retnrn, we i*eed go no further for proof of the late wealth, and man fold resources that have encouraged and developed tho several ventures.
