Serious Accidents.
AUCKLAND. January 10. Whilst a number of young ladie-i were bathing this morning off Mount St. Mary Ponsonby, one was carried beyond her depth. A young lady named Miss Geddes went to rescue her, when the drowning woman seized her and both s ink. A lad named Walter Paynejumped in and caught the drowning woman and swam ashore with her. Miss Geddas succeeded in reaching shore, being rescued by a bather. She was insensible for three hours, but was ultimately resus* citated. A boy named Hamilton, whilst sitting on the Government Wharf this afernoon was very seriously scalded- Hamilton was fishing alongside the steamer Taiarra when Lowe, the second pilot, was showing a party the steam windlass, and on starting it the boy w ho was opposite the steam p p’, was blown back on the wharf, his face, chest, abdomen, and legs being severely scalded. Remedies were applied, and the boy was wrapped in a blanket and taken borne. Early yesterday morning James Brown a little child under three years of age, whose parents reside at the Toitoi Valley before the latter arose obtained possession of a box of matches, anl, dressed m a nightgown, was playing with the matches outside the house, when his nightdress ignited. The child’s screams ccused its father to run out, and extinguis- , hing the flames, his hands were much burned. A doctor attended the child but it died from the effects of the injuries this morning.
