SATISFACTORY PROGRESS
The engineer of the Franklin Elec-tric-power Board (Mr T. R. Overton) in liis report to the board at yestermeeting, stated:— Buildings: Satisfactory progress is being made with the construction of the store and sub-station. The contractor for the cottages has as yet only the material on the ground. Tenders: A number of tenders have been received for contract No. 14, for galvanised steel and iron wire, viz., William Bence, Samuel Brown, Ltd., Joseph Nathan and Go., 11. G. Anderson, Richardson McCabe, all of Wei lington. I would recommend that the board accept the lowest tender, that of Samuel Brown, Ltd., Wellington, for £.'187 lls Cd. Tenders are at present being invited for electric motors which will close on August 3. As il is advisable to have the orders placed as soon as possible I would recommend that the tenders committee be given power to act with regard to these tenders.
Valuations: With regard to the Pukelcohe plant it is anticipated that the decision of the arbitrator will be made next week, and arrangements have been made for the board to take control on August 1. The work of valuing the Waiuku plant is well forward, the arbitrator has been selected, and it is hoped that an early settlement will be effected.
Pole Dump. Railway station pole dumps: Application has been made to the Railway Department for the use of pole dumping space at the railway stations throughout the board’s district. A small rental may be charged for the use of these sites depending on the area required. Line work: The extension of the borough lines to connect Mr Wylie and Mr B. Roulston has been commenced, but progress will be delayed on account of cable not coming to hand as was expected, due to the Australian shipping strike. Poles: The contractor advises that the first two shipments of poles and hardwood, consisting of about 2000 iron hark poles, etc., have been held up in Australia on account of the shipping strike. An attempt is being made Lo obtain volunteer labour to load the ship, but so far no word has been received whether it has been successful.
Staff: Mr E. Slavin, electrical inspector to the I-lorowhenua Electricpower Board, has been appointed electrical inspector to this board in accordance with authority given at last meeting. lam certain that Mr Slavin will be found very capable and efficient in the work to be done in your district.
