MANUREWA TIMETABLE.
LETTER READ AT BOARD. The following letter was read at the last meeting l of 'tie Manurewa Town Board dealing with the railway timetable. The writer, Mi Enos Pegler ,has made a careful study of conditions and suggests several improvements. ‘lfhe latest timetable of the N.Z. railways in so far as it affects the districts of Takanini, Manurewa and Wiri, call for united action in the putting of our disabilities before our member, and the using of other means (press and propaganda) to obtain a better service. The present new service is a retrograde step as far as these districts are concerned and places us in a very unfair position in competition with our neighbours, Papatoetoe, and to some extent, Papakura. If your Board would obtain a large sheet—Auckland, Newmarket, Onehunga and Papakura timetable A sheet, as posted on the board at the railway stations the neglect of these districts mentioned will soon become apparent. A simple analysis :
A study of the above will reveal the following disadvantages!, in addition to the number of trains daily. First. —No very early train for workers desirous of arriving in the city at 7.15 a.m. Second. —No convenient train for Civil Service employees ,whq|| commence duties at 8.30. Third. —No train for practically 3 houi'S, and this in the middle of the day, that is, ijrom 11..5 a.m. to 1.44 p,m., and that particular train, 1.28 from Papakura, has a running time of 1 hour 14 minutes for the 20 miles Papakura to Auckland. This especial point should be advanced, that for the average farmer or business man does not require to spend the day in the city but requires to do some banking and get back to the farm 02* office, this long period of approximately 3 pours in the middle of the day is very inconvenient. The 1(1.5 reaches the city at noon. The 1.44 reaches the city at 2.42. TES6 ! avm;‘-Saturday, from Papatoetoe. The 1.12 p.m. daily from; PapatOotO6. The 1.22 p.m. daily from Paputoetoe. At least one of these trains should serve Manurewa and disti'icts. We should certainly, agitate that if, the railway authorities will not stop the fast expresses, (especially the 1.22 p.m. from Papakura) at Mnaurewa, then the Papatoetoe service should be extended on to Manurewa. Here I have dealt only with the service Manurewa to Aucidand. There are sorry disabilities in the service Auckland to Manurewa, but I am leaving the matter ,of analysis and these defects to regular travellers and members of the Board. Our member, the Prime Minister, will be in Auckland during the holidays and Icdrtainly think representations on these matters should be brought under his notice. (The Board decided that as soon as the position of the Government is determined representations will be made to the Minister for Railways on the matter.
