It is being- proposed that New York should be vacuum cleaned. Instead of using brooms and shovels and sweeping machines that stir up the dust and fill the air with got ms, it is suggested that .the streets should be treated in the same way as floors and carpets in houses, and have their dust drawn up through pipes into proper receptacles, avoiding the risks to health inseparable from the old-fashioned methods.
