The counts, re-counts, and corrections which have taken place over the Waitomo seat recall to mind the experience of the Hon. Wm. Rolleston, father of Mr J. C. Rolieston, M.P., for Waitomo. In 1899 the Hon.. William Rolleston was opposed by Mr G. W. Russell for the Riccarton seat. On the night of the election Mr Rolleston was. announced to have a majority of nine, but two days later the official count cut the lead down to two. Mr Russell demanded a re-count, and this left him with a victory snatched by one vote, launching Mr .Russell on his political career and sending Mr Rolleston to retirement.
