SOME JOB.
HOW MANY MEN WILL IT NEED TO ENFORCE PROHIBITION. This little country town of ours, New Zealand, has— An area of 103.284 square miles. A coastline of over 4000 miles. Forests covering 11 Vi million acres. R6ads " measuring 64,328 miles m length. Rjailways completed lor 3009 miles. Overseas ships arriving—744 last year. Licensed fishing boats 1566 of them, besides private launches, etc. If Prohibition comes, then every mile of coastline will have to be watched, bo prevent the landing of liquor. Patrol boats and “chasers’ will be necessary all iround New Zealand. All movements of oversea ships must be observed and checked for he same purpose, whilst wnen they are in port careful guards will be required to keep the costly fiuiri out of the country . AH this calls for men and money. You’ll pay ! MORE MEN AND MORE MONEY. All fishing boats and private launches must be registered, their outgoings ,-and incomings noted and recorded, -their unloadings supervised Jest they have wickecl cargoes of grog for dlfy throats ashore., Ail this calls for more men and more money. You’ll pay ! Bushlands must be watched, too—--almost any gully, almost any patch ■of bush,, may contain a ttili or a brew-house., Thebe will be plenty of them, you may be sure. More men again and more money. You’ll pay! Some sort of look-out will have to be kept upon every mile of road and 'railway, because the “sly-grog” that is made among the hills and in the andl the “sly-grog” that is landed on our beaches, must be transported to 'its purchasers. Quite a lob oif men and money will be needed for this wdrk. You’ll pay ! THINK IT OVER! How much is it going to cost us to enforce Prohibition if we get ic ? Thousands of men, thousands of boats, motor cars, aeroplanes—all these ‘ will be needed. And the whole crowd of “headquarters stalf” to record and ‘tabulate, to amend rules an dorganise, to prosecute offenders—and to spy upon the spies. Enforcement machinery and stalf, including police, have cost Americp scores of millions of .dollars —and Prohibition has not been enforced! It can’t be done. Vote Continuance ! 90
