“In 1871, ,ius! 51 years ago,” says the Napier Teelgraph. “about 2500 would have purchased a square mile of land, the ownership ol' which today would mean an immense fortune. In that year the late. Mr Thomas Tanner. who was so intimately conceded wil.il the rise and progress of the town of Hastnigs for many years, offered for sale a block of 610 acres as a whole for 2500. that is to*say at £4 per acre. That, area extended from the site of what‘is now the I‘nion Bank corner to the Havelock Bridge oil one side, and ou the other along tin* Karamu Road to the site subsequently utilised by the late Mr C. A. Fitzroy for residential purposes. The block of land, which includes the site of Hastings, was purchased from the natives in 1864 at 30/- an- acre.”
