PERSONAL.

Mr T. Ashby, Inspector of Permanent Way at Lamhton (Wellington), who completed his fortieth year of service in I lie Railway Department on Monday, and is retiring on superannuation, was farewelled at the office of the District Engineer on Saturday last. The District Engineer, Mr C.' T. Jeffreys, • in presenting Air Ashby with a solid leather suitcase and rug for himself, and also a travelling bag and silver tea service for Airs Ashby, conveyed the good wishes of the maintenance staff of the WellingtonWairarapa section, with which Air Ashby had been associated for the past ten years. Air F. C. Widdoy, Supervising Engineer, also spoke eulogistically off Air Ashby, and the work performed by him, especially during the war years, in connection with the military camps at Trcntham and Feathers ton. Air Ashby was horn at Tuihimata. After working two years on Mr Tylden’s farm at Buckland, and two, years for Air B. Honeyford at Tuhiinata, tie joined the Baliway Department at the age of 15 in 1882. In the early days Mr Ashby served at Karaka, Mercer, Rangiriri, Olorohanga, Helensville, and Parnell. While at the latter place lie married a daughter of the late Air Luke Ballard, and after residing at Parnell for eight years was transferred to New Plymouth, hut later returned to Auckland and resided at Ellerslie. After working through the various grades, lie was appointed Inspector .of Permanent Way at Whangarei in 1905. He was later stationed in a similar capacity at Te Aroha, Pukekohe, and Lamhton. He has resided at Pelone for the lastten years.

Air Ashby’s many friends and schoolmates in the district will join in wishing him many years of health to enjoy his well-earned retirement.
