MANUKAU COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Manukau County Council was held on Tuesday, when there were present; Crs A. D. Bell (chairman), Jas. Montgomerie, F. Granger J. Luke A. E Hathaway. J. M. Davies. F. M. Waters, the ‘clerk (Mr Edgar Ashcroft), and the engineer (Mr W. J. Lopdell). With regard to an amount of about £6OO owing to the County by the Manurewa Town Board, the clerk reported that so far the account had not been settled, and he was instructed to advise the Town Board that the Council expected it to pay bank interest on this amount.
Complaints were made that gorse was becoming troublesome on certain properties in the Turanga, Papatoetoe and Papakura Ridings- The clerk was instructed to serve notices on the people concerned, with a request ithat gorse be cleared. The Department of Agriculture stated that £3O was now available for clearing the River Reserve Clevedon of noxious weeds, and asked if tfie Council would undertake to see that tfie money was spent to the best advantage.—Referred to engineer and Riding’ members. Mr Pedo Manuel, Papakura, wrote offering his services as ranger for the Papakfara Riding of the County. —Received. No action taken. The treasurer for the New Zealand Government advised that £2SOQ, being the amount of Government subsidy to the County, had been placed to the credit qf‘ the Council at the Bank of New Zealand, made up as follwos: Mangere Ridling £707 12s lid ; Pakuranga £309 19s 2d ; Papakura £339 13s lid; Papatoetoe £686 19s lid ; Turanga £ll7 5s 10. d ; Wairoa £338 8s 3d. Further complaints were received from the Mangere district to the effect that' unlicensed cattle were again straying on the roads in the Mangere Riding.—lt was pointed out that the cattle were -doing considerable damage in some quarters Ranger’s attention to be drawn to the matter. With reference to the proposed subway at Otahuhu railway station Messrs Wright, Stephenson and! Co. suggested that the A. and P. Association should also be asked to subbecause the society owned adjoining property and would; also benefit through tlhe proposed subclerk reported that he had replied to the effect that he was endeavouring to arrange a conference between the parties, and his action was endorsed. The clerk was instructed to write to the A and P. Association asking if it would subscribe in accordance with the terms of the proposal set forth by the Minis/ter of Railways, whose suggestion was dealt with in our report of the last meeting. The East (Tamaki Co-operative Dairy Company applied for permission to take the company’s drainage from its butter factory at Tamaki down do the Main East; Tamaki Road some .10 chains, and thence across the road in a north-westerly direction and over private property to an arm of the sea. The proposed drain wouLd consist of a 6 inch glazed pip£ drain at ileagt 2 feet below the surface of the ground, and would carry the water used in the coolers and! the washings of the factory.—The request was granted the work to be done to the satisfaction of the County engineer. Mr Alex Cv( Black, rurall route. Papatoetoe, wrote stating that fresh tenders were called for the Papatoe-toe-Flat Bush rural mail service and the postal authorities would not entertain the mail passing Mr Hill’s property unless the road was properly formed andl made passable at a,U seasons of the year. Fifteen children used the road to atjtend the District School. When the .road) was properly formed and made suitable for vehicqlar traffic it would be a main road from Whitford to Wiri. —Referred to Cr Waters and engineer to deal with. ,
The Department of Internal Affairs advised that regarding the proposed constitution of the Borough of Papatoetoe, a Commission, consisting of Messrs J. E. Wilson. S.M., Auckland (chairman). -R. P. Greville Commissineor of Crown Lands, North Auckland, and )H. J. C- Coutts, officer in charge Valuation Department, Auckland!, had been set up to enquire' into the matter. The Public Trust Office advised thati the fir*|t instalment £IOOO. Moumoukai Hill Road loan, had been remitted and placed to the credit of the Council at the Bank of New Zealand. Accounts amounting to £3636 4s 8d rceommen-ded by the Finance Committee, were passed for payment. Engineer’s Report The engineer reported as follows : Mangere Riding. The crushing plant is proceeding satisfactorily at the Springs, and to date about .1000 cubic yards have been crushed. There are still about 500 cubic vards of spalls to crush. Tenders have been called -for quarrying further atone but none accepted. Owing to the continuous dry weather we have experienced difficulty in getting the metal to set after being" blinded, with scoria. Coronation Road is now metalled as far as the Black Bridge, and a start made from the Robertson Road corner, on the Walmsley Road, towards the present finished work* Councillor Montgomerie and I inspected the atone fence offered by Mr Corry and our opinion is fhat the stone is not suitable for the main road, but would do for one cif the side roads. A set of 9in glazed/ pipes has been inserted on Coronation Road opposite the crushing plant. Pakuranga Riding. Buckland’s Beach Roads : These roads have all been patched up with scoria an,d) shell blinding. Shine’s Road : This job is now nearing completion, andl only No. 5 culvert now remains to be filled in. Scoria : 10 cubic yards of scoria have been put on the Botany Road by lorry from Lushington’s pit. Botany Road Bridge : Six deck planks have been

Wiri Staition Road: Higgins and Finn have signed up this contract, and have commenced the work. Turanga Riding. Foreman Page reports that he has spent most of the month water-tab. hng and cleaning out culverts on various toadis* Blank and Co. are proceeding very satisfactorily with the Maraetai formation. They have trimmed up from the far end to the aush at Craig’s, and are now ensraered on; the big filling. About another week will complete Craigs’ deviation. It would greatly improve the road if the hill leading off the le Puru bridge were regraded as it is now the worst piece of grade on the Toad,. fThe fiat from this bridge to Kelly’s homestead is very rough, and should be regraded. Re the con crete culvert Foreman Holemby has completed this job and; has turned out a first-class article. He is now engaged on the Turanga bridge where we found it necessary to put pin new beams (throughout under the wheel traffic. Papatoetoe-Whitford proposed road: The plans and estimates will be available at this ingWairoa f? idling. Oram’s bftfdge has had slight repairs carried out during the month. Mr J. Brodie has also effeafed re. pairs to a bfiJdge on Ness Valley Road. Foreman Peterson and his gang are doing very good work at Orere, All the old wooden culverts have been replaced with pipes, and the formation and regrading carried continuously from the Harbour Board’s mill to the level ground over the last creek. Mr Grierson has had one day on Mr Rowland’s deviation survey, and, weather permitting, will complete the work on Wednesday, the 11th inst. Councillor Luke assisted us in laying out the new road through Mr Rowland’s property, and when made this road will be more direct. Mr Rowlands is desirous that thq Council’s plant and staff carry out the work while in the district. Building permits amounting to £6795 have been issued during the month. The report was adopted. „
