The secretary states 'that the Gtahuhu Trotting Club has kindly given the Gun Club permission to hold its meetings in future on the former club’s grounds at Mangere., The Gun Club committee met Mr J. Sommers of the Trotting Club on the ground on Saturday morning and) selected a site, well sheltered from all winds. At the last meeting of the committee a vote of thanks was accorded to the Trotting Club and also to Messrs J. J.. Thomasin and W- B. Lloyd, of Otahuhu for their generosity >ln allowing the club the use of their properties in the past. The next meeting of the Gun Club will be held on the new ground at Mangere. On Thursday evening last Dr Truby King delivered an address on “Child Welfare” at the Otahuhu Public Hall. Mr Alfred McDonald occupied the chair and with a few appropriate words 'introduced the speaker. There was a good attendance, and Dr King’s remarks were followed with keen interest by those present. After the conclusion of the address a vote of thanks was accorded to Dr King for his very interesting and able lecture, on the motion of the Rev. H. Mason, seconded by Mr Murdock. Dr King suitably responded. A fire occurred at Mr Wm. Gardner’s bake house in Great South Road on (Tuesday morning at about 12.20 a.m. The fire was discov|ere.d by Mrs Gardner and it then had a good hold, but assistance was promptly on the scene and the fire was got under before any seflious amount of .damage had occurred. The fire started opposite the furnace door between the back of the mixing table: and the wall, and it apparently originated through a spark? from the furnace igniting the flour dust and sack fluff on the floor. The bakehouse was last visited at about 5 p.m. the previous evening by Mr K. Gardner, and there was then no trace of any fire and there had been no fire in 'the furnace since mid-day. It is thought however, that the flour dust and fluff would ’smoulder for| some considerable time before bursting into flames. The total amount of the damage to the building is estimated at £sfl, and the damage to the stock and fittings is estimated at a similar amoiunt. The building was, in. sured in the State Firfe Office but the stock an.d fittings were not insured.
The total amount raised by the recent entertainments organised by the local Plunket Nurse Committee in aid of the funds of the Plunket Nurse Society was £53 4s 7d, and a cheque for this amount has been forwarded to the secretary of the fund. The ladies of the commitee are to be congratulated on the success which has attended their efforts.
