BOROUGH COUNCIL Th eordinary bi-monthly meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday last at 7.30 p.m. There were present the Mayor (Mr R .B. }Todd) Councillors Brady. Clements Hall, Micholls, Preston, Shepherd: and Whiteley. The Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs wrote statjing that the Council’s further objections to the separation of Mr E. Harding’s property from the Borough would receive serious consideration. Pillion Riding. Messrs Stanton, Johnstone _ and Spence wrote stating that a fixture' had been obained for the pillion rid(ing test case at ,10 a.m. on the 26th inst _ before Mr W .R. McKean, S«M. A further letter in this connection was received from Mr R. E. Champtaloup objecting to the statement in the newspaper report of the previous Council meeting that ithe dignity of the Council had been over-ruled and pointing out that the formal breach had been committed! in an orderly manner and wff-h good feeling on both sides. The town clerk stated that he had written to Mr Champtaloup reassuring him on these points. —The letter was received. Three letters, were received 1 from the Medical Officer of Health at Auckland" asking that notices be served on various residents to have specified works done at their premises- It was decided to comply with the requests. ftlasigere Station. Mr H. T. Re veil of King’s College, wrote asking for the Council's support to a petition to have the name of Managere railway station altered to “Middlemore’' on the grounds (1) that the station is not m Mangere but in Otahuhu Borough ; (2) that Mangere proper is four miles distant ; (3) that the use of the name causes confus/.on in delivery of parcels and letters anci (4) the name Middlemore is the old name of the estate on which the station stands and is the name most commonly used to designate the locality. It was decided to support the petition. Councillor Whiteley drew attention to the tacit that though the Auckland Meat Company haa exended their outfall pipe for 150 feet,, as instructed uy the Heu.,th L'epartment, . hey were not complying with, the Lepaitments instructions as to discharging sewage tfrom the pipe, as he had frequently seen the pipe discnarging at low water. He proposedn .that as the chairman of the Mount Wellington Road! Board ‘ was present arrangements be made tor a . conference and jo(.nt action by the two bodies. The motion was carried ana a conicrence will be herd snortly. LOYAL FRANKLIN LODGE. One cif ithe most successful functions ever held in connection with the Loyal f ranklin Lodge took *piace in the Masonic Hail last Thursday evening. The social took the form of a farewell to Dr C. Kowley, who has been medical officer to the lodge for 30 years and also a welcome <to Drs Evarard and Gladys Rowley. Bro. F. Short, Noble Grand presided in a most efficient mannerJine hall was crowded, amongst the audience being seven district officers. Several toasts were honoured, namely. the Royal toast the -‘District Officers.” proposed by Bro. H. Wills and replied to by Bio. Byers, Deputy District Grand Master ; “tne ladies,” proposed
by Bro. Harper and replied to by Dr Gladys Rowley. Bro. T. Arnold, secretary of the lodge made the presentation of a handsome silver tea service suitably engraved, to Dr C Rowley. In his remarks, Bio. Amod paid a glowing tribute to the long and faithful service rendered to the lodge by Dr Rowley which, he said was to . a large extent instrumental fin maintaining the harmonious feeling which existed in the lodge. Dr Rowley suitably replied. On behalf of the lodge Past Grand Bro. H. Wills presented Bros. Haslip and Jones with certificates of merit on thtlMr completion of their terms as Noble Grand.
Several musical items were rendered, songs being given by Miss. C. Morfitt and Messrs Ridu'io, Smith Dickson and Montgomery, and humourous recitations by Bro. McMillan. A feature of tr.e evening was the decoration of the supper tables, for which ,the ladies were responsible. The function was concluded, with tne singing of “Aul Lang Syne.”
