A SUCCESSFUL FUNQfION. Summed aip from all points of vitfw ’"he Pukekohe Returnee! Soldiers Ball, in the Strand The- . a,tre on Monday night was an un- ‘ Qualified success and compared very iaydurabiy with previous (functions held under this auspices. In spite pf the fact that the town and UiS. ■ trice has been deluged with dances and socials during the winter, dancing enthusiasts were eagrely lookting /forward to the soldiers’ ball, and although the attendance was satisfactory it could not be saidi tha>t it was as large as last year. There were 108 couples in attendance. The hall had been tastefully decorated with lacapcdtum, nikau palms and bamboo, while artificial festoons constructed out of numerous coloured ribbons hung from a rather unique platform suspended from the ceiling. The decorations were exquisite andl were elrected under the baton of Miss Nellie Hawke, assisted , Jby the committee The curtain and the foot 'of the stage was lowered and the stage itself converted into a supper room which was also artis- ■*% ticady decorated, while the tables nicely set contained delicious edibles which suited all tastes. Draping the stage curtain was a large Union Jack”, while to the operating box was hung the badge of the N,& Returned Soldiers" Associa. ' tion in white letters on a blue back-, ground, while the indentificatiton number was F.N. ,146. The badge was indeed a work of a|rt and was produced by Pukekohe’s returned ' soldier signwriter (Mr Horace V. Gribbie), The floor was in excellent condition Tjie dresses worn by the fair sex were indeed a beautiful lot and with the, artisUic decorations a brilliant was presented.. The supper arrangements were in the hands of a laches committee consisting of Mesdames H. Stuart, E. Crum V.
