POWER HOUSE MYSTERY UNRAVELLED.
(To lhe Editor
Sir, —Being, as I supposed, one of
“those dirty dogs” referred to by the Mayor, I have been lying quietly in my kennel, in a sense “licking my sores," but after reading the correspondence in your columns of late — and especially the epistle by our local Sherlock Holmes, to wit. “Honan Coyle.” on the “Power House Mystery,” I ask you. Sir. how can one keep quiet? Why the mystery is as “light as day”—how the Mayor must have laughed up his sleeve when the “expert” from Auckland carne and gave it as his opinion that the engine smash was due to a fualty or Vfatigued” bolt, when, according to his advertisement lie knew or knows that »l. is someone tampering with the plant. No wonder that the Mayor stated “no decent folk would read your paper”: it certainly goes to show that he is no “dud” after all—for does not “Sherlock Holmes” say that it is you! What a double-barreled villain you must be.Just think what we poor suffering mortals have had to put up with: you and your .set of "devils"—and all for filthy lucre. Just for a few extra “tuppences.” Ye gods! to think that we have been inclined to put the blame upon all and sundry from the Mayor downwards —and yet you and your satellites have been walking amongst us with faces so innoceni and bland —they would soothe a child to sleep. I rather anticipate that at the meeting called by the Mayor the burgesses are going to get some inside information they have little dreamt of; it may even be suggested that the council buy out the Times — lock, stock, and barrel. If they do, “What oti!” they will deal with you. —I ani, etc., W. HURLE.
[Mr Hurle is delighted at the “expose” developed by Sherlock Holmes and surely feels that now the villain is unmasked that a satisfactory light will result. We sincerely hope that his visions of continuous light will not fade, and that from now on his premises will radiate a brilliant glow of light which will be only excelled by the glow of satisfaction on his countenance. —Ed. Times.]
