GOLF NOTES.
PUKEKOHE GOLF SEASON. CLOSING DAY MARCHES. Ideal weather prevailed on Saturday lasit when the final competitions on Rhe local tynks weije played. The course was in excellent condition due to the rains which had fallen during the week thereby assisting the care and efforts of the caretaker who has greatly improved the putting greens and course generally, The presentation of *tnophies was made by Mr Jas. Roulston, president! of the cluh, who, in referring to majttek't in connection with, the club, said: "1 think it is safe to say it has been the moa/t successful in its history. We selected a splendid, committee, who have been untiring in their efforts to promote its welfare gener. ally, anid the grounds committee by enlarging and top-dressing the putting greens, and our‘ca,retaker by his attention in prieparing the putting greens have added much to the season’s! enjoyment The social side has been well oatered ffdr. The afternoon tea on Saturdays has always been an enjoyable function, and is of our club, and I am sure I voice the opinion of the men (folk when i say we are very grateful to the ladies for the able and vf.Jling manner in which they have come forward', not only on ordinary Saturday afternoons but also on .the special oc casions when wq have ha,di visitors frbm other clubs, and we wish to assure them that itheik- help has been a main factor in making the season
a success. The various competitions organised by the Match Committee have been very interesting and enjoyable and the trophies won have on many occasions only been secured after an excising contest by the narrowest of margins, Our players have also enjoyed the pleasure of staying in some inter-club matches and visiting other distiridts These visits in due course have been re. tumqdj and have been one of the pleasant features of the season’s play, and our success in these intefrclub matches has been very gratifying fco ,all and makes very pleasant reading: Pukekohe v, Waitemata, 4 wins* 6 losses, 4 drawn; Pukekohe v, Waiuku, 2 wins on our links and 1 win at Wdtuku ; Pukekohe v. Papakura, 1 win on our links and 1 win at Papakura- This is a splendid record for our club to hold and shows that our Representatives have worthily (upheld l the honour of tte club* but I am sure the record we are all most proud of is the performance of. -the team that repfetheir recent match with memersb sented the Franklin Association in th,eir '.recent match members of the Hamilton Club played at< Hamilton. This >,team was pithed against some of the best players in the Waikato and the result of that match has been a splendid advertisement for golf in Franklin. It goes to prove that the standard of golf is rapidly improving, and I am sure all golfers in Franklin were very proud of our representatives on reaching the .result. In fact, I think we all felt it was a feather in oiur caps. Another outstanding performance by
a. member of our club that calls for special mention is that of Mr W. P, Hopkins in winning 'the junior championship of the Auckland Club. 1 am sure, ladies and gentlemen, that I voice the opinion of ouV members when I say that we have had a splendid leader in Mr Brosnahan, He is very enthusisatic, knows practically all there is to know about the game, and so long as we have men like him to lead the players on the field as captjain and to giuide (the will be nothing to fea|r about the club’s future prosperity.” The afternoon tea, tastefully arranged in the A. and P. Society’s luncheon room, was provided by Mrs Jas, Roulston,. ably assisted by MesDuring the tea adjournment, Dr
Campbell-Smith, vice-president o xne club, spoke of the very practical assistance which the Pukekohe Golf Club received flrom the Messrs Roulsjton Bros, in permitting play on thesh property, thus facilitating the laying out oil a. very up-to-date coi*rse.
