THE BENEFiCIENT OLD-AGE PENSION. There is every indication that the amount paid in old-age pensions this year in the Dominion will show a substantial increase in the aggregate. This is due to harder times bringing more applicants along. In normal times many old people did not care to apply for the pension if they could manage to get along without it. The Wanganui returns show an increase of applicants for the past few months compared with the corresponding periods last year. One instance of a spirit of independence of a»ome of the old people may be given, An old lady, bofuering on SO years, made application recently. She had been a widow for 41 years, and had battled along consistently and kept herself, but at last, in ine evening of her life, she was obliged to make application for the pension, and like a good many old people relt tliankfm to the late Mr R. J. Seddon for having been instrumental in having the sellune carried through. Last month there were also five applications for the widow’s pension in Wanganui.
