A DUNEDIN INCIDENT.

THE DANGER OF LIVE WIRES. Says the Otago Daily Times: A certain Dunedin resident experienced an awful , fright the other evening. Pulling himself together, he passed his hand up and down to assure himself that he was all there. Then he gazed at the chair on which he had stood, and half feared to sit on it. Gradually he realised that the electric light must somehow have been the cause, and as his wits returned his conscience accused him, for he remembered that he had unwarrantably fixed up the metal lamp-holder instead of Sending for the authorised wlreman. Quite penitent, but still lacking the element of -repentance that makes open confession, he telephoned to the city electrical engineer that his installation had gone amiss. A member of the city staff called and examined the fittings, and found that the lamp-holder had been re-wired by somebody who did not kuow anything about it with the result that the wires had not threaded the porcelain properly, so that as soon as the light was turned on the lampholder became alive and capable of shooting 230 volts through anyone who touched it.
